Criticism of Perry’s work focuses mainly on a perception that it perpetuates negative racial stereotypes.

Despite praising Perry in 2006, in 2009 director Spike Lee criticized his work when interviewed by Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise, saying, "Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is 'coonery' and buffoonery. I know it's making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better ... I see these two ads for these two shows [Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns and House of Payne] and I am scratching my head ... We got a black president and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep 'n' Eat?"[30] When Gordon cited Perry’s success among black audiences and asked Spike if Perry wasn’t just giving black America what they wanted, he responded, "We've had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [created his films], people came out to see Boyz n the Hood, but when he did Rosewood, nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us. You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and the man has a huge audience, Tyler's very smart....We shouldn't think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African Americans, we're not one monolithic group so there is room for all of that, but at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to Amos 'n' Andy."[30]

In September 2009, Jamilah Lemieux made similar remarks on National Public Radio. While thanking Perry for employing blacks in front of and behind the camera and for making work with humor and "positive messages about self-worth, love and respect", she criticized him for making television shows "marked by old stereotypes of buffoonish, emasculated black men and crass, sassy black women." She took him to task for his Madea character saying that through this, "the country has laughed at one of the most important members of the black community: Mother Dear, the beloved matriarch.[...] Our mothers and grandmothers deserve much more than that." She stated that she appreciated that he was dismissive of critics' comments concerning his work, "but many black folks have expressed some of the very same attitudes about your work that white critics have." She stated that blacks "have been fed the same images of ourselves over and over and over because they sell." She felt that his success had been "mired with the worst black pathologies and stereotypes" and called on him to "stop dismissing the critics as haters and realize that black people need new stories and new storytellers."

Hmm, i heard about this Spike Lee and Tyler "Beef" I don't think Lee is right about Perry. Both brother's make movies about the black community perry just shows the things us as black people don't like to touch or talk about. I do prefer Spike lee films more because they don't have the same concepts. I'm not a huge fan of tyler perry something about him and his works urk me but i respect what he's doing.

Spike lee just need to chill let the man make his money.

Spike Lee does a lot of movies centered around New York..Does that make them bad movies?

Lots of people need to understand what the concept of a target audience means...Essentially it means what audience you are MARKETING YOUR PROJECT TOO- basically, who matters. Tyloer was in no way attempting to push his movies to worldwide fame...he was marketing his movies to bp..SPECIFICALLY black church women.

This means if you aren't in that targeted group (the group which doesn't on it's base matter)..well your complaints aren't valid. All you need to do is simply choose not to watch his works because it's not your support he's banking on and it's not coonery because he's playing to his base audience who enjoy getting a good laugh at themselves (like all groups like to do btw).

Tyler is however showing weakness because he's clearly having sex with someone who has an agenda to silence anything which caters to bw and thus his projects are starting to reflect that underlying hatred the person boinking him has for bw. So, that's why he will soon fade away to non importance.

No, not at all. Both men are exceptional visionaries, both men know how to probe sensitive issues found in our community and bothe know how to collect great cast members and get them ALL to fulfill an objective that would normally be hard to do under other film producers.

I respect BOTH equivalently, but Spike is more my personal taste too.

Plus, I've been following Spike since I was a kid.
