I have been talking to a lot of Africans lately and one thingthat seems to always come up is the differences between Africans and American blacks. Of course there are the cultural reasons like food, clothing, mannerisms, etc but when it comes down to discussing the genetic differences. Whenever I politely point out that there is a subtle, yet noticeable and important difference between us and them they always get defensive, and when I point out the fact that most people (who aren't African) find us (and other diaspora blacks) more attractive they get downright angry, claiming that this isn't true and that there is no difference between us and them.
I thought it was something I only noticed among a few people, but when I got curious and looked it up on the Internet I saw dozens of discussions involving pathetic Africans trying to convince the world that they are "just as attractive" and that there is "no difference". Pfft. I feel it's necessary to break down the physical differences, as I see them, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed these differences too:
1. We are a unique mix of about a dozen different west African groups, with a dash of European averaging %15. Of course we are going to look different.
2. We have, on average, lighter skin than Africans. About 20% of us are lightskinned, 60% are a medium shade of caramel or cinnamon brown skinned, and about 20% of us are dark-skinned or African-colored. These last 20% tend to get made fun of and are considered unattractive in the African American community. Personally, I would say they don't look like "real" African Americans, or at least they don't fit the quintessential look we have going.
3. We have softer features. African Americans tend to have more medium sized noses as opposed to the pinched, bird beak noses of whites and the bulbous, sausage noses of pure West Africans. We also tend to have normal sized foreheads and full lips that sit well on our faces (think Meagan Goode or Gabrielle Beauvais) as opposed to oversized lips that are spread across our face and disproportionate to the rest of our features. Generally this creates a more "moderate" African look (or what one might call "the African American look") that you see on TV shows and on the hottest young black stars (think Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Tristan Wilds, etc).
4. We have more moderate bone structure. Our faces tend to be slimmer and softer as opposed to the robust, bulging cheekbones and foreheads of Africans. This is why most Africans are considered extreme looking while AA's are not.
5. We tend to have better body types. We tend to be taller and less squat/stocky. Now don't get me wrong, a lot of AAs have that short stocky body type but they are a far smaller minority than the amount of Africans who do.

Keep in mind i am referring to west, central, and southern Africans in this, as those are the ones we are descended from All in all I think it is a combination of these things that create the African American look and these are all reasons why AA's are generally perceived as more attractive. We have a softer, more approachable black look as opposed to Africans who are often just too extreme looking to be considered AS attractive as AAs. Now I know there are some Africans who have some or all of the African American features I just mentioned, and I believe those are the lucky ones as they often get mistaken for African American and therefore probably get more attention than their more traditionally African looking counterparts. And I know there are some Africans with all of the African features I just mentioned who are still attractive, although they are much more rare.
So Ibiust had to put all of that out there and frankly o don't care what any African thinks about it or if they ge offended because clearly they are unable to see the truth, probably jealous. I am sick of them trying to drag us down with them when we are different, with our own culture and our OWN ETHNIC LOOK. it isn't our fault ours is better than theirs, don't be mad because we evolved to bigger better things!

First off I am what Americans call dark, and I have always heard "You're cute to be dark", when in reality if I was light I'd still be attractive. Also, my bone structure is by far my favorite of all my features, my nose is medium/small appearind round from the front and sharp-like from the side (like Scarlette Johansson's nose). My eyes are chinky/almond, long eyelashed, high cheek bones, full and naturally outline of lips are well defined (like a phillipeno), and a slender face, natural long (to my breast) thick aurburn/black kinky hair. People always ask what else am I mixed with? Why the fk does it matter, I look Black so I'm Black.
Though Black people is truely just a race of mutts. Also ALL MIXED PEOPLE are not light.
Living proof and you disgust me, that shit rubs off on your kids.
In elemetary I was teased by boys for my color and once they grew older I was the pick of the darn bunch. Best physique and fashion!:D Also 2 desirable lightskin girls told me they wish they were dark before. Ugly light skin girls cling onto their lightness because (when it comes to society) that's all they have.
And all types of girls wish they had my proportion, all races.
Hispanics also compliment me, tellin me I LOOK mixed.

No offense, I work with many, and I do find black americans more attractive. Let me tell you, their are some beautiful west african women out their, and south african women out their! Now, one lady on my job, no hate, she looks nothing like a Black American, keeps telling me, how much we blacks look like africans, and how my boss look like a african, little did she know, my boss is mixed! My boss is the same complexion as I am, and have the same hair type as me, Im mixed along the lines, not directly. Im not going to lie, if I see a black american that is very dark skin, very full features, I usally dont think they are from here, unless I saw them on the streets. Most of us are mid brown. Africans are not ugly, they have their own look, we do too, but we look alike in a lot of ways, but their are differences.

Colorism is a form of black-on-black racism, based on skin-tone, exemplified in terms such as "high yellow" (sometimes written and/or pronounced as "high yaller") as well as the "brown paper bag test". There seems to be an implicit calculus behind this belief that makes the goodness of the individual inversely related to the darkness of his/her skin.

The brown paper bag test was a ritual once practiced by certain African-American sororities and fraternities who discriminated against people who were "too black". That is, these groups would not let anyone into the sorority or fraternity whose skin tone was darker than a paper bag. Spike Lee's film School Daze satirizes this practice.

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/08/31/Columns/The...

Each year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission receives about 85,000 discrimination cases, a phenomenon to be expected in a society that touts itself as a "melting pot."

Many of these cases involve the complaints of minority groups against majority groups. We rarely expect a member of a minority group to discriminate against someone else in the same group. But that is exactly what happens among African-Americans.

More than any other minority group in the United States, blacks discriminate against one another. The discrimination, called "colorism," is based on skin tone: whether a person is dark-skinned or light-skinned or in the broad middle somewhere.

and so what if they do have dark skin? the darker the berry the sweeter the juice, here we are about to go into 2012, and the ole jim crow law has very much damaged our brains. when are we gonna shake that spell that so long separated light skinned blacks from dark skinned blacks. we will never be shit as a people, and all the other races will continue to treat us with contempt as long as we play in to the inner racism of light blacks vs dark blacks. i will say this, skin color is not what make you look beautiful, because ugly comes in all races, black, white, yellow, brown ect... it's really what is on the inside of the person that counts, because i would rather be with an ugly nice person, than a beautiful asshole for sure.

I agree. I can easily tell the difference between Nigerians, Ghanians, Haitians (pure Africans in the Caribbean) and African Americans. We know that not all West Africans look the same but on average, they tend to have very dark skin, broader facial features, and bone structure. In general, most AA have lighter skin (most of us are caramel/brown skin) and watered down African features - African features are still here but they're softer than pure African features and toned down.
