Yesterday while traveling through North Carolina I encountered a Lumbee Indian. I had pulled into a McDonalds, ordered breakfast then while I waited I overheard this woman talking to two white guys. From where I was standing she seemed Asian. What got my curiosity was her accent: it was an accent I hadn't heard in a long-time -- a Dolly Parton kind of county accent. I thought she must be an Asian born and raised in North Carolina. When she turned completely in my direction I saw at once she wasn't Asian, but some other kind of mix.

Being a student of American accents I had to say something to her. I asked her where she got that accent; she replied, "Oh, I'm an old Lumberton Southern Girl. It was only then that I realized I was in Lumberton, North Carolina.

Lumberton is in Robeson County, a county long-associated with a group of people who call themselves "Lumbee Indians." Although the state of North Carolina identifies them as "native Americans" the Federal Government does not. Basically, the Feds say they the descendants of mulattoes or more technically, "tri-ethnic isolates.

The Feds say that a 1753 tax survey is evidence there were "no Indians" left in the Bladin/Robeson County area. Meanwhile, there where plenty of mulattoes and "Free Negroes" there at the time.

The Feds say during this time -- up until Nat Turners rebellion -- white women freely married and lived with black men. The Feds concede that over time many of communities incorporated an admixture of Indian blood.

The woman at McDonalds looked a bit like Halle Berry. As we talked it seemed to me I could see all three bloods in her -- white, black, Indian. In truth, I was ready to put her down as a mere mulatto type until my eyes were drawn to her feet: she was standing "pigeon-toed" -- the points of her feet pointed inward. Suddenly I remembered hearing sometime during my youth this the Indian's way of standing.

I told her this and her face lit up as bright as a Christmas tree. We kept talking and the more I talked about Indians the more animated she became. In a while she going on about Indians full bore -- it was as if she couldn't talk about anything else. In little time it had reached the point where I couldn't eat my food for all the nodding and yes-ing I had to follow up all her comments with about how Indian she was.

She left and came back still babbling about her Indian roots. She left again. I took a bite of my burger; then when I looked up, there she was again babbling about Indians.

This last she had a broom and dustpan in her hand. It dawned on me that for all her supposed Indian pride, she was low-man on the McDonald's totem pole.

You need 12.5% or higher to claim Indian status legally.

Native Americans do not consider them Native. Go on youtube and read their comments. They are mixed with black, white, and native, and many look like this. My friend told me that a lot want to be full blood.

Don't forget the Shinnecock, too!

They're mostly black today, hating it so much, they're fighting to be federally recognized.

So far, only New York state acknowledges them.

I thunk they're only about 1,000 remaining.

united states has signed themselves off so they can't be sued in world court for crimes/genocide against indigenous peoples. The first europeans the elite that came over recorded black folks in north south and central americas plus the islands. its recorded by several people in their own journals to their leaders which they were commissioned to do..so now we're talking about official records not what anybody feels like barros seems to think. Colonizers aren't going to recognize the wrongs done so it doesn't even matter. shinnecock are black and have been since the beginning. nobody is taking anything from these ugly azz fake azz mongoloid and mixed europeans acting like natives...

It seems to me the woman's accent was the result of some kind of isolation whether self-imposed or not. North Carolinas haven't sounded like that since the 1950s. When I mentioned it to her, she beamed with pride.

The socialogical name for these folks is "tri-ethnic isolates. The term suggests that long ago there were communities where whites, Indians and blacks interbred. This would have been before the Nat Turner Rebellion of 1821.

The "rebellion" ushered in Jim Crow and a litany of racist laws and practices that forbid interracial marriages, socializing, etc. If you want to point to the one person who fouled up things for black folk rarely bad, Nat Turner is your man.

So, not wanting to be punished by the Jim Crow laws, I'm thinking these tri-ethnic isolates (Lumbees) hit on the idea of calling themselves Indians. This would have been sometime after the Rebellion (1921).

My sense is that all of them have a mulatto in their family tree, which of course means all of them have an African there too.

From Wikipedia:
"The color of his skin is of a whitish yellow sort, with an admixture of copper—such a skin as, for the nature of its components, is in color indescribable, there being no negro blood in it except that of a far remote generation of mulatto, and the Indian still apparent." [47]
As I was leaving the McDonald's another girl walked in who was almost identical to the first except that her long brown hair had kinks in it.

Bet she calls herself Indian too.

They have been mixing since colonal times, and I think since indenturec servitude was the first form of work here, with blacks, and with Europeans, both were indentured servants before slavery. They are multiracial in truth, but they do have native culture, but I dont think they speak language.
