Jim Wyatt's Titans offseason breakdown

>> Key stat: Kerry Collins threw 12 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions. >> Status report: Collins' contract is set to expire next month and his offensive teammates want the Titans to re-sign him. Vince Young remains under contract, but no longer has the backing of many teammates. No. 3 quarterback Chris Simms made great strides in his recovery from a spleen injury, but his contract is up too. >> What Titans should do: Re-sign Collins as soon as possible, name him the starter, and then see what kind of commitment and attitude Young shows. If the Titans can somehow persuade Chris Simms to come back to see how things play out, he's worth re-signing. >> Key stat: Rookie Chris Johnson rushed for 1,228 yards, nine touchdowns and was selected to the Pro Bowl. >> Status report: Johnson showed he's capable of being the workhorse, running the football and catching it out of the backfield. LenDale White had his moments, but simply doesn't have the same impact. It was a lost season for Chris Henry, a second-round pick in 2007, but not for Rafael Little, who used the year to get himself healthy from a knee injury. Quinton Ganther added depth and remains under contract. >> What Titans should do: Lean on Johnson even more and read White the riot act - shape up or be prepared to ship out. The guy could do so much more. If Little has a solid offseason, look for him to take Henry's place on the roster. Ganther should continue to be a swingman at running back and fullback behind Ahmard Hall. >> Key stat: Justin Gage had six touchdowns. The rest of the wideouts combined for one. >> Status report: Gage battled injuries early in the season, but once he got healthy he was productive. His performance in the playoffs was especially encouraging. Justin McCareins didn't have the impact the Titans hoped for, and his contract is up. Time is up on Brandon Jones' deal, too. Rookie Lavelle Hawkins underachieved, while Paul Williams and Chris Davis look like blown draft picks. >> What Titans should do: Count on Gage to be the No. 1 receiver and re-sign Jones, who has the potential to deliver consistently. The Titans need to grab a playmaking receiver in free agency and the draft. Hawkins could develop in time, but this is probably the year Williams and Davis don't make it past the final cuts. >> Key stat: Bo Scaife had a team-leading 58 receptions, also his career best. >> Status report: Scaife's contract is up. He was a force early in the season, but not as much down the stretch. Veteran Alge Crumpler has a year remaining on his deal, but he was invisible at times this season. Rookie Craig Stevens contributed on special teams and as a blocker in the run game, and improved when it came to catching the ball. Casey Cramer has a year left on his contract. >> What Titans should do: Re-sign Scaife. It's vital. He's a playmaker and his role could be expanded. Stevens will be counted on more in '09, but the Titans need to find someone else in free agency or the draft because while Crumpler provides leadership, he just doesn't provide the explosiveness he once did. >> Key stat: The Titans allowed only 12 sacks. >> Status report: Center Kevin Mawae turned in an All-Pro season and should be 100 percent by training camp after surgery to repair a triceps. The rest of the starters are also under contract, including tackles David Stewart and Michael Roos, who earned extensions last offseason. Guard Jake Scott played well in his first year with the team. Guard Eugene Amano had a good season, too. As for the reserves, Leroy Harris got some valuable playing time, Daniel Loper's contract is up and Mike Otto remains under contract. >> What Titans should do: Not much. The Titans feel good about this group, but don't be surprised if Harris supplants Amano at left guard. After two years it's time to see if Harris lives up to his potential. The Titans need to re-sign Loper, a valuable reserve the way Jason Mathews was earlier this decade, and restock depth in the draft. >> Key stat: The Titans had 44 sacks, their biggest total since 2000. >> Status report: Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, but the rest of the bunch is back. Kyle Vanden Bosch had an injury-marred season. Jevon Kearse has a year remaining on his contract and will be back, as will Tony Brown. Player to watch: Jacob Ford, who was productive. Rookie Jason Jones showed positive signs, but rookie William Hayes has work to do. Dave Ball and Kevin Vickerson add depth. >> What Titans should do: Re-sign Haynesworth. If they can't reach a deal with the big fella, things will look dramatically different, and the new defensive coordinator will have to blitz a lot more than Jim Schwartz did. Ford deserves more snaps after racking up seven sacks, but he needs to get stronger. >> Key stat: Linebackers Keith Bulluck (first), Stephen Tulloch (second) and David Thornton (fourth) were among the team-leading tacklers. >> Status report: Bulluck continues to play at a high level and Tulloch was an upgrade from Ryan Fowler at middle linebacker. Thornton is steady and productive. Behind them, Josh Stamer, Colin Allred and rookie Stanford Keglar played well on special teams. >> What Titans should do: Nothing except perhaps bolster their depth. >> Key stat: The Titans were seventh in the NFL in interceptions with 20. >> Status report: Safety Chris Hope was named to the Pro Bowl, but second-year safety Michael Griffin played just as well - he had a team-leading seven interceptions. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan was exceptional, holding some of the NFL's top receivers in check while recording five picks. Nick Harper played well, but was banged up. Nickelback Vincent Fuller is a free agent, as are reserves Chris Carr, Tyrone Poole, Reynaldo Hill and Eric King, whose forearm injury cost him the second half of the season. Veteran safety Donnie Nickey remains under contract along with Cary Williams and Tuff Harris. >> What Titans should do: Don't mess with the starters but work on the situational players. Fuller is a good nickelback, so re-signing him is important. Re-signing Carr, who played a key role in the return game, should also be a priority. King deserves another chance with a one-year deal. But it's also time to go after a cornerback early in the draft - Harper isn't getting any younger, and his contract is up after next season. >> Key stat: Rob Bironas was 29-of-33 on field goals, 40-of-40 on extra points. >> Status report: Bironas had another good season even though he missed a big kick in the playoff game. Punter Craig Hentrich is a free agent who might retire. Chris Carr helped the Titans finish first in the league in kickoff returns, but his contract is up. >> What Titans should do: Try to re-sign Bironas to a long-term deal, and if that doesn't work, put the franchise tag on him. The Titans think Hentrich is going to retire, so finding a new punter will be a big priority. And did we say re-sign Carr?
