A Long Island woman has been charged with endangering the welfare of her four children after a neighbor called 911 to report that the kids were living in filth.
Suffolk County police say they arrived at the home in Lake Grove Wednesday night and found that the home was infested with bugs and filled with garbage.
Police say the basement was flooded, the smell was revolting and the children had not been fed for a week. They are aged 2, 9, 12 and 15.
Police found the mother, Denise Schnell, at her workplace. She will be arraigned Thursday on four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She should be punished for life. And have her children placed in a home where they'll be wanted and cared for and loved like they should.

I would take these children in a second. Does anyone know who to contact to be a foster parent until a loving family could take care of these kids. I'm so sick of this.

You're right. I was too quick to judge this woman. No one really knows what's she's going through. No husband,@@itty job, trying to make ends meet. Look, I feel that the 15 year old could help around the house and I have a 10 year old that helps me with her brother. Maybe she is trying her best, again, no one really knows. |

I agree-I dont really believe anyone would choose to live this way or have their children live this way. With this unstable economy, unfortunately, I think we will be seeing alot more of this. Maybe our presidential candiates should step out of their comfort zone and see where this country is headed. |

Anyone who is interested in becoming foster parents contact the Suffolf County Dept. of Social Services. You will have to take a 10 week course consisting of 3hrs 1 night a week and a backround check. There are so many children who are out there that need someone to be there for them. I've been a foster care parent for 8 years and don't regret it at all. If you like kids go for it! |

the kids werent fed in a week. the house was loaded with garbage and smelled like death...the woman (the responsible adult)is unfit to have these kids. shes obviously f*&ked out of her skull.

Jean, isnt it confusing though. I can't help but feel sick over what these kids have been through. I'll never know what the mother's issues are but how do we reconcile not feeding your 2 year old? I dont know this whole story is so disturbing |

If anyone has read Newsday this morning, the article states that Denise was suicidal. She's a sick woman. My heart goes out to her and I hope she gets the help she needs and FINALLY relatives have decided to intervene. The kids seem so relieved, according to the story. Anyway, maybe this will have a happy ending |

I'm sorry, I do believe in second chances, but I also think this woman should have the children taken away from her until she can prove that she can be a fit mother. She should have to go through serious, LENGTHY rehabilitation, as well as take classes on how to be a responsible adult and parent before getting them back. If she can't prove herself, then they'd be better off in foster care than with her. There is no reason why a house can't be kept bug free, and children can't be fed Ramen noodles if nothing else. Don't have 4 children if you can't take care of them. Birth Control does work, as do anti-depressents. I can speak for both because I've used both. There were 13 years between her first and last child, I truly don't believe this only came on in the last two years. And if it did, then she knows how it should be and would have enough sense to make it right for her children.

yeah...a house doesn't reach that level of filth in a week, or even a month. While i feel sorry for the illness that may have interfered in her life, there is still no excuse for this level of neglect. If she was the sole provider for all 4 children for the entire 15 years, then those kids probably didn't have a clue as to what 'normal' really is. However, i do find it odd that a 15 year old wouldn't have survival skills...and at least try to get the other kids some food. she needs serious medical and psychological attention, and should not be allowed to have her children returned to her until she has completed some serious therapy. My heart goes out to the younger children, but i still find it very hard to believe that the 15 year old didn't have a clue that they all needed to eat. |

My heart rests in these children hopefully they are safe eating and are bug free may them never ever have a situation like that again!
