Full story: Associated Content

The country of Eritrea, sandwiched on the Horn of Africa between Ethiopia to its south and east, Sudan to its north and west, and the Red Sea along its eastern coastline, has certainly had more than its share of historical conflict.

Yes Eritrea is the undiscovered jewel of Africa despite the constant battle that raged on the war torn nation. I was capitivated and delighted by the overwhelming culture that co -exist all over the nation Eritrea. As I have visited the nation for the brife time now I regret it more for not spending more time as my best friends vacation there annually. I have suggestion the Sub Sahara low lands tend to be unforgiving with harsh humuidty and heat waves, I suggest you stay hydrated and indoors as much as possible. Asmara is obviously is to admired however Massawa is a sight to see. Massawa is a true legacy of the Ottoman empire with structure that is to be marveled from historic point and architure point.

ASMARA, Eritrea—Three children ranging from two to four years of age were among the latest group of 23 Jehovah’s Witnesses arrested in Eritrea. In that number is also a child of 8, a woman over 70 and another over 80.

On June 28, 2009, some 23 members of one congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Asmara were peacefully meeting together for worship. These meetings also serve to encourage and support congregation members since many have already suffered the loss of other family members who were imprisoned, several of whom were the breadwinners for their family. Most of the latest arrests are female congregation members because their husbands and sons have long since been arrested.

The total number of Jehovah’s Witnesses known to be imprisoned in Eritrea is now 69. About 20 of them are in their 60s and 70s. Since July 2008, Eritrean authorities have summarily arrested responsible members of the Witness community. Most are now in prison. Also, over the past several years, the police have often arrested people for merely attending a Witness meeting. In many cases, however, no reason for the arrest was given. This is a contrast from arrests made presumably on the basis of nonparticipation in military service. Three young men arrested on those grounds are still being held in prison nearly 15 years later, but they have never been formally charged.

I came back from Asmara a few weeks ago and I have been to the Cathedrale (catolich church) every sunday, I have visited the Kidsti Mariam (Coptic church) at midnight service, as well as Kidsti Micheal, another Coptic church and I have also witnessed/participated at the festival of the Moslem Holiday at Bahti Meskerem with thousands of belivers while they celbrated I'aid. My dear friend is a Kenisha or Evangelist beliver and he goes to church at Inda Kenisha every sunday but I wasn't able to visit it with him due to time constraints. So was there any religious prosecution that I saw NO, that I heard Yes, why? Because they refuse to do as the law requires and everyone agrees is necessary for the country.

Hi tegadalay, you should be ashmed of your self for using the word of tegadalay to describe your self, because this name needs to be reserved to the real Eritrean heros, our heros. How can you say there are only three religions in Eritrea, there always were many other religions in Eritrea living peacefully amongst each other, as a christian orthodox we were always told our God was the best by our families. But now I see religion is just spiritual believe tha we learn from our families or are some thing that people choose to practice as an individual. So religion has nothing to do with spying or serving any organisation in Eritrea or any where in the world for that matter. If you check the histroy of religion in the world, you would find religion is usually the main reason people fight and kill each other, so it annoys me when people like you make some religion are oky to be practiced and not others. Stop being narrow minded person and value every one of your fellow Eritreans. Tegadelti gave their preciouse life to leberate their people regardless of their religion believe. However I also have a sense of that you are a loyal Eritrean, that you would like to shut your eyes for any thing negative about our country and high light for posetive issues. While there is nothing wrong at looking in the bright side of things, it is also very important to see at the wrong thing of issues, so that things can be corrected before they get totally out of hand.

Hi, Tegadalay the three religion in Eritrea are the dominant ones, but religions like kenisha is quiet common. And alot more relifions that are practice amongs some tribes and some small minority of our people they should have been left alone to practice what ever inriches their spiritual needs. If people are left free to believe what ever they wanted they become adventarous and unique individuals who are the best at what they do. The second part of your comment is who created those other religion, I have the same quaetion to you can you tell me who you believe your religion is created by. For example Christian orthodox came to east africa with the early colonization era. It is along story but books where translated from other langauges to Geeze and as the result the Ethiopians and Eritrean dominant in this religions where and still are amongs the most religious people in the horn of Africa. For muslims and other religions I recommend you to read a book called the little Histroy of the world. And I hope you will come to understand all religions were created by great philisopher who were giffted with the most amazing imagination that can capture people's thoughts and dreams. But all tose people with great minds were not always greats, because they have used their creation of religion for their advantage, to envade and congour places using war amongst different believers. I guss you are orthodox like me one of the dominant religion in Eritrea, but we do not have the right to put the minority of other religions down no matter how and when the practice arrived in Eritrea, because at the end of the day all religions are envented or created some where else and that we addopted the from envaders. Then handreds or thousand years later we might take it as if God came one day to Eritrea, people of Eritrea here the christian religion called Orhtodox is yours and be faithfull to it no matter what. Tegadalay please think outside the square you in give people the freedom to be what they wanted to be as long as they are not hearting their fellow Eritreans or any other people for that matter. I must say it is plessure talking to you and have a good day.
