Kenya: Hydro Power Project Hits Pastoralists

Wario Galelo, 64, raises livestock downstream from the site of a hydroelectric dam which the Kenyan government plans to construct on the Ewaso Ngiro river in the north of the country. Like many other local residents, he is furious about the dam, which will be located in Oldonyiro in Isiolo County and cost around ten billion Kenyan shillings .

To put that in perspective, the WHO estimates that air pollution, the primary reason for coal's high mortality rate, kills 7 million people annually.

He said taking cue from the numerous claims and counter claims that followed the construction of the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam in the 1960s, the government ensured that areas around the Bui Hydroelectric Dam that were likely to be flooded were surveyed with the consent of the land owners identified and well documented.

Brookfield to Build Hydroelectric Power Plant in Brazil

Brookfield Energia Renovavel, a unit of Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management Inc., will add to its generating fleet with a 25-megawatt hydroelectric power plant in Brazil's southern Rio Grande do Sul state. The company is in the process of securing environmental permits for the Serra dos Cavalinhos I project, according to a Brookfield Energia official who asked not to be named in line with company policy.
