If the administration had said it immediately disciplined the students and taken appropriate actions to ensure the substitute teacher would no longer be used by the new britain school system this would have been a much smaller story and less of a black eye to the NB community. seems like a communications breakdown. the buck stops with kurtz on this one.

Yeah, because this is all the teacher's fault. Maybe if these wingnut parents raised their kids properly things like this could be avoided

I have worked for Kelly Educational Staffing for awhile now. In fact, I have been a substitute teacher at Pulaski Middle School on several occasions. I have to say that I can see this happening at Pulaski. All the schools in New Britain are as bad as this and the students are absolutely out of control. I think the substitute teacher involved in this incident should be commended for even working at Pulaski! What New Britain schools NEEDS to do is offer a social skills class for students and parenting classes for the parents of these students to figure out what is going wrong here.

I was a substitute teacher for kelly services several years ago. not only did you require to hold a B.A. but you also needed to go through the same channels other teachers who are hired: finger prints, references, teaching experience. Plus $70 a day is hardly making off with tons of money. You never know when the next time you're going to get called. It's not like the can have other jobs while you wait to be asked to sub. AND I wasn't aware that you were in the class and knew the circumstances. Why blame the teacher? How do you know that the kids weren't in a corner hiding out? Seems like the school system is looking for a scape goat. Out of 800 young adolescents at Pulaski, two did something very dumb. Most of the students there are interested in usual teenage activities -- sports, music, art, web surfing, computer games and yes, each other. But their behavior is appropriate. What a shame two kids had to act so inappropriately! It's not the norm.

I am a substitute teacher through Kelly. Although I know that I do a great job and I love substitute teaching there are people who don't do a great job because they don't know what they are doing. When I was hired by Kelly services they made me take a drug test and a criminal background check but they gave me absolutely no training! I was thrown into subbing knowing absolutely nothing! I have since learned a lot but a little training would have helped. I do feel bad for that substitute though...it's not her fault that a couple of thirteen year olds did what they KNEW was inappropriate. She could have been more vigilant but in the end the kids are the culprits here. At thirteen you ought to know better!

75-80 dollars a day is what we make. Substitute teachers are not millionaires. And it is a HARD and THANKLESS job. Its NOT the substitutes fault that these kids don't know how to behave. Substitute teachers are only there for one day. How is it the substitutes fault? New Britain Schools needs to be talking to the parents of these kids! former kelly worker wrote: I was a substitute teacher for kelly services several years ago. not only did you require to hold a B.A. but you also needed to go through the same channels other teachers who are hired: finger prints, references, teaching experience. Schools in other towns are just as bad. I've worked in both New Britain and other suburban town schools, and stuff like this happens everywhere, and behavior at this age is crazy.

"Failure to properly supervise a class" is the reasoning the teacher will not return to the school district. What about the failure of the parents to properly raise their children with a sense of decency, morals and respect for others. This speaks volumns of the parenting the children have received.

Blaming the substitute teacher in this case seems an oddly familiar refrain.
In a New London case a couple of years ago, inept and negligent administration teamed up with an out of control prosecutor to crucify a sub for a porn spam infestation on a computer she knew nothing about. The students took advantage of her substitute status and browsed to the porn sites on a computer she was told to keep her hands off. Even with technical support from around the country backing her up, the school administration and their prosecutorial cohort still tried to point their collective fingers at, and hang, the sub.
It is time for the helicopter parents to start taking the blame for the lack of behavioral control by their "little darlings" and stop expecting teachers to rectify their parental shortfalls.

What do you expect the teacher to? These "kids" are probably gang members (like their parents)and this is the "parenting" they learn. If my kid was even thinking of doing something like this in a classroom, I would be ashamed of myself as a parent and beat the living daylights out of him and throw him out of the house and make him get a job and work and learn some respect. And no welfare for these brats along with their poor excuses of parents.

Of course it isn't the teacher's fault! But it's probably easier to place the blame on her. This is a problem with today's society. particularly kids. There is no accountability for anything anymore, hence, ridiculous lawsuits, etc... I hope the teacher takes legal action, which would be completely justified.

There is no doubt that 8th graders in Avon, Farmington, West Hartford have engaged in sexual activities. The difference is they haven't been caugt.

POINTS TO PONDER

They are both "minors" regarding age. Therefore, charge BOTH of them for having sex with a minor. The law does not exempt a minor for having sex with another minor. Therefore, both of them are guilty of rape because of the age.

to whom it may:concern: well there may be alot of things newbritain kids do but not everyone does that!why are we singled out for this?everywhere this is happening and pulaski is only bad due to the teachers affect on them.alot of subs do not face the same treatment because they do a good job.I had the same MALE teacher as a sub from what i hear and he is a bad sub.dont believe me?ask around he absolutly was the worst and this is coming from a student who is very intelligent.he did not even look after our class he let us run around the hallways!!and he was very unattentive to the students.the parents also should not be blamed because at this age a lot of students were having sex and their parents are unaware of it!what are the parents suppose to do watch over the kids at school?no they need to work.thats the schools job but nevertheless the sub was the one watching it and all he could say was pull your pants up.no one but the students who were involved should be blamed because it was their choice.and as the people say below all they do is take tests and throw 'em in.with no type of classes or training.the only thing thats in the news about our school is this topic. No one ever reports our big poetry slam or schools athletic department winning anything!and i believe this is the only bad thing that happened.because of people like the HATERS below who posts negative comments we are being lectured everyday for this since the incident and are being judged based upon 2 students. If any more people want to ask questions regarding this comment post it up and i'll explain why people like you are hurting newbritain kids cuz like .5% of our school did that and now we're all being labeled as pigs and or nasty children do not blame no one else but the students who engaged in the act and the media because this is not the only thing that happened in the whole country i bet you it happened more than once in anyother state.its ridiculous how such a big mouth and hardheaded you guys are.pulaski is a good school if your a good teacher ask anyone there that the students are very well intelligent and well rounded
