I am shocked at all this "hoey" about acetaminophen "overdose". I suffer from chronic back pain, even after seven surgeries and a spinal cord stimulator implant still have a condsiderable amount of pain 24/7. For yrs I took vicodin/percocet in increasing strength and quantity...upto 12 7.5/750mg tablets a day before moving on to Norco and finally phentanol patches (along with 6 percocet per day). I've never had any problems, blood work always normal. While i didnt ever take "tylenol" i did take cold medicines at times that did contain acetaminophen. I heard recently that taking acetaminophen for four days in a row is sure to kill you. Whatever! I took medications for 10+ yrs "in a row" and without ANY ill affect. Its just one more product people need, that a government agency will prevent people from having, leaving people to suffer. I call B.S. on the whole thing!

I totally agree with you, Barbara. While APAP is harmful in lethal doses, it is the responsibiltiy of the patient to stay well-informed about the risks. One simple solution to the dangers of too much acetaminophen is that doctors prescribe medications such as Norco, percocet or demerol- these medications not only provide superior pain relief, but contain less APAP or none at all. It is absurd that additional APAP is added to many narcotic pain relievers in an attempt to discourage abuse. If a person is drug-seeking with the intent of abuse, no amount of acetaminophen will discourage an addict.

I take one 7.5 vicodin a day, half in the morning and half at night. the hype is about the acetaminophen in the vicodin. if someone is uninformed and takes tylenol while taking vicodin then there could be a problem but the way to avoid such problems is simple, just know what your medicines contain and don't mix drugs without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist. It is best to tell a pharmacist of all your medicines whether prescription or otc, they can advise you what to discontinue when resuming pain meds, etc. Oh yeah, and if they ban vicodin because of the acetaminophen in it, it will make my life hell.

I do not understand why the drug manufacturers cannot simply make good pain medication WITHOUT APAP!! The FDA has to step in and force them to do so. It is my belief that Tylenol made deals with other companies to include their product when it is truly unnecessary.

You people are idiots. Educate yourselves before you start crying over nothing. There ARE drugs without the apap.
They add the apap because the oxycodone/hyrdocodone is TOO powerful on it's own. And for those saying "I take ..." such and such everyday, well, thats YOU. You cannot base fact on YOUR expereince. The limit per day is supposed to be 2000 mg, if that. |
