Nurses are among some of easist to become addicted and abuse drugs.(I am not coming down on any nurses who are diligent in providing wonderful patient care to anyone out there, please take no offense to this post for yourselves)
My own mother is a retired nurse, back in the day, when a patient refused meds. or didn't need them, she put in her pocket, then taken to the waste basket and thrown away. Finally, when things tightened up in the 70's, they had to do a specific "count" during shift changes with the medication nurses. Each and every pill had to be accounted for.
That all said, there are ways around this. To a normal everyday patient, they don't know the difference between getting 25mgs. of demoral or 50 mgs. and it is EASY for a nurse to dispense only half of the medication, saving the rest or injecting in a bathroom or patient room. On a visit just this year, one nurse had no idea of my tolerence, and the 4mg. of diaudid I got every 2 hours, she thought she could get away with only 3mgs and I saw her inject herself with the 1mg. She thought I was in "gonesville" but I was far from it. I reported her and they launched an investiagtion, and it is my understanding that she was "released" from duty for "other" reasons as well.(this same nurse argued with me about the "times" I was given my meds. so hubs kept a record also, we were right, but she entered them in the computer as being given every 2 hours!)
Patients need to be aware of WHAT they are taking and how much. They need to be shown what it is they are being given. And if alert enough, keep an inventory sheet going. Just like I/O (input and output). The patients family should also be up to date on current medications.
It is very unfair to the patient who is suffering severely and the nurse decides to take half for themselves, or anyone else for that matter. My own departed father-in-law, his wife was taking half of his oxycontin, no one could figure out why he wasn't getting any relief, that was until he was finally hospitalized. While out of her care, did he finally get the help he needed.
To all those nurses out there who have taken their Florence N. oath and upheld it, I applaud you and all that you do. For those who have taken advantage of others and myself, there are no words sharp enough that can condemn you.
Sorry folks, this just hits too close to home...

Daily Horoscope for February 10

Scorpio

You desire relations with others and passion in the work place, some of you may even combine both. If your work involves something you love, you will relish this day of expression and connection. If not, it will be hard to apply yourself. Singles will need to watch they don't jump into a relationship for the sake of company, but couples will be attached at the hip.
