Yes, the RESULT was the fall of the Berlin Wall. The CAUSE, however, was the sustained Polish Revolution with landmark dates in 1956 (Poznan), 1968 (students), 1970 (Gdansk), 1976 (Radom), 1978 (John Paul II's election), 1979 (Papal visit to Poland), 1980 (Solidarnosc), 1981 (martial law), 1983 (lifting of martial law), 1984 (martyrdom of Father Popieluszko), 1988 (mass strikes & demonstrations), & 1989 (collapse of the PUWP, Roundtable, & free parliamentary elections in June). Germans were the happenstance beneficiaries of a successful, ballsy, Polish Revolution that also benefitted the other East Bloc nations, and THAT MUST NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. Truly, World War II is what really ended that year. What began with Poland as a victim, ended with Poland as a key player!!! Therefore, it is only fitting to have Lech Walesa tip the first domino.

I saw Communism fall in Poland in 1988-1989, when I studied at the University of Warsaw.

What an experience that must have been for you!
The Berlin wall held significance for me having had family who were trapped in East Berlin.
