Czechs take part in weekend protests against ACTA

Some 2000 people protested against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement in the streets of Prague Saturday, according to the police estimates, and similar protest rallies were staged in Brno, south Moravia, and other Czech towns.

Czechs reclaim Mendel paper from Germany

The Czech Republic has regained a manuscript of Versuche ueber Pflanzen-Hybriden by Johann Gregor Mendel, founder of genetics, from 1865, after a 25-year effort, the Czech Foreign Ministry told CTK yesterday.

Child abuser conditionally released from jail

Barbora Skrlova, who was sentenced to five years in prison in a closely watched child maltreatment case, was released on parole with a seven-year probationary period, the Pardubice Regional Court ruled yesterday, Ales Korejtko, from the court, told CTK yesterday.

White nose syndrome has been diagnosed in a European bat for the first time. The disease, caused by a fungus, Geomyces destructans , has wiped out millions of bats in the US since it was discovered there in 2006 The single case, in a living bat, signifies that the disease may occur sporadically in European populations.
