A Superior Court judge Tuesday sentenced a woman to 40 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a young Santa Paula woman, an aspiring photographer, a homicide that occurred midday in a busy park. Yajayra Lizette Dominguez, 33, cried as she appeared before Superior Court Judge Kevin DeNoce March 17 who before imposing the sentence said the 2013 killing of 21-year-old Ashley Calanche was 'senseless and tragic ... ' A jury found Dominguez guilty in January for second-degree murder in the shooting death of Calanche, whose large family has been in Santa Paula for generations. Comment?

Mayor John Procter and City Councilwoman Jenny Crosswhite will be serving on an ad hoc committee with citizens interested in finding solutions to public safety issues a move that led another council member to urge wider participation. At the March 2 council meeting City Manager Jaime Fontes noted those citizens who supported Measure F - which sought voter approval on a 1 percent sales tax to benefit public safety and roads - 'Remain interested,' in finding solutions to ongoing public safety issues working collaboratively with the city. Comment?

Arrests in Santa Paula saw a healthy increase as the department beefed up the force with more officers able to act proactively and citizens that showed their willingness to pick up the phone and report suspicious activity. Police Chief Steve McLean said there were 1,420 arrests in 2014 compared to 1,158 arrests in 2013, or 263 more arrests in 2014, a year-over-year increase of 23 percent. Comment?

An alert citizen took a photograph of a suspect that took a package from a neighbor's front porch, a snapshot that landed a 24-year-old Santa Paula resident in jail Monday. Clark said, 'SPPD Officers were dispatched to the area of Elfred Court and Laurie Lane,' regarding a neighbor's report of a theft of packages from the front porch of a nearby residence where they had been delivered by UPS. Comment?
