A Richmond man arrested in connection with a February 2014 murder pleaded guilty to attempted robbery Monday and was released from custody based on time already served. Richard Contreras Barajas, 26, was arrested with two other suspects -- Hector Paul Nava-Martinez, 21, and Guillermo Alexis Alvarez, 20, both of San Pablo -- in the shooting death of 19-year-old Franklin Lopez on the 2100 Block of Dover Ave. in San Pablo in what police believe was a drug deal gone wrong. After a contentious hearing in which the mother of a murder victim lashed out at the family of his killer, and a relative of the defendant had pointed words for the judge, a West County man was sentenced to 90 years to life in prison for murders committed five years apart. Timonte Emari Cook, 24, was convicted in December of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Nicholas Martin, 24, gunned down in broad daylight on a Richmond street in 2007, and of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Ruben Cannon, 24, during a large brawl at a San Pablo apartment complex in 2010. 1 comment

A high-speed chase that began with the report of a stolen license plate briefly closed down several lanes of eastbound Interstate 580 on Saturday afternoon after the speeding driver struck another vehicle and then crashed into a center divider. The pursuit began at 1:30 p.m. when a Richmond Police officer responded to a report of a stolen license plate. Comment?

Around 10:39 p.m., the Vallejo Police Department Communications Center received multiple calls of shots being fired in the area of Carter and Frisbie streets. Leon Ferguson, 28, was sentenced Friday to spend 46 years to life in prison for a 13-hour crime spree in Antioch that included kidnapping, robbery and sexual assault. Superior Court Judge Charles Burch called it a "disconnect," that despite losing his father and uncle to violence, Ferguson nonetheless robbed two men and two couples with a handgun and fondled the female victims. Two residential burglars who were interrupted by a witness in Tiburon escaped police Monday after a high-speed chase up Highway 101 to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Silverado Drive, where a resident heard glass breaking and saw two burglars at a neighbor's house, said Tiburon police Sgt. Comment?
