A Carbon County jury panel returned a split verdict against a Luzerne County man who had been charged with several drug counts by Weatherly police following an arranged drug sale. Following a two-day trial, the jury of eight men and four women found Randy Cepedes Ortega, 23, of Hazleton, guilty of criminal use of a communication device, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. After nearly three hours of testimony, charges against Johan M. Pujols, 22, of West First Street, were bound to court. Police charged Pujols with homicide, attempted homicide and two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly shooting two men outside Club 570 on Aug. 1. Yeury Colon, 25, of 118 Webster Ave., West Hazleton, was killed by a single gun shot to his abdomen, Luzerne County officials ruled. 1 comment

Police said a 27-year-old man from Hazleton was shot several times early Sunday in the area of 33 E. Diamond Ave. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to the hip and leg area and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was undergoing surgery. 1 comment

Surveillance footage, a damaged car and a string of anonymous tips put Tiffany Timko in interview room four Friday at the Scranton Police Department Headquarters. There, the Hazleton woman told Detective Joseph Lafferty something hit her windshield while driving to PNC Bank on South Main Avenue after 8 p.m. Wednesday, causing her to pause before driving on. A Hazleton woman locked up Saturday on hit-and-run charges has a history of getting pulled over, and she also completed a state rehabilitation program following a 2011 drunken driving offense. Scranton police say 25-year-old Tiffany Marie Timko struck Betty Sawkulich, 32, Wednesday, three days before her arrest, while driving on South Main Avenue. Comment?
