Search widens for missing Appalachian State coed

Volunteers from Forsyth County are joining in the search for an Appalachian State University student who has been missing for a week. The Charlotte Observer reports volunteers from Kernersville were preparing on Wednesday to walk along the Mountains to Sea Trail, a 900-mile route of footpaths beginning in the Blue Ridge Mountains, to look for Anna Marie Smith.

Ashe County unemployment up in July

Ashe County's unemployment rate increased slightly to 7.4 percent in July, according to the latest data released by the North Carolina Department of Commerce on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The county's unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percent from June, when the rate was at 7.4 percent.
