As the days grow shorter and summer comes to an end, two Union County towns are ready to say goodbye to one season and usher in the next, through their annual festivals. Stallings Fest and the Weddington Country Festival will return to their respective towns on Sept.

Library Association of Waxhaw funds Early Literacy Station

Lindsay Shuford of the Union County Public Library accepts a donation check from members of the Library Association of Waxhaw. WAXHAW- In celebration of the group's five-year anniversary, the Library Association of Waxhaw presented the Union County Public Library with a check for $2,930 to fund an Early Literacy Station the Waxhaw branch began using in July.

Southern States opens superstore in Monroe

Southern States Cooperative, a farm supply company, unveiled its new Monroe Rural America superstore in a grand-opening ceremony held Aug. 29-30. The 10,000 square-foot facility at 1620 E. Roosevelt Blvd. saw shoppers for the first time in five years.

Kilah Davenport’s death ruled a homicide by state medical examiner

Child abuse victim Kilah Davenport’s death has been ruled a homicide by the state medical examiner’s office, new case records show. An autopsy report released last week found that 4-year-old Kilah died in mid-March of pneumonia due to complications of head injuries from the 2012 assault by her stepfather, Joshua Houser.

DHHS Secretary finds innovation at CMC-Union

Thursday, N.C. Secretary of Health and Human Services Aldona Wos toured Carolinas Medical Center - Union, cheerfully introducing herself to hospital staff. In preparation for a major overhaul of the state's Medicaid system, Wos and several NCDHHS officials are touring community hospitals in North Carolina.

Road construction projects are scheduled to begin this morning on two uptown Charlotte streets and on a road in western Union County. Charlotte transportation officials say Eighth and Ninth streets will be closed for six months between North College and North Brevard streets.

Husband and wife duo arrested in string of felonies Last week , the Union County Sheriff arrested a husband and wife duo charged with committing over 50 crimes during the past month in Monroe, New Salem, Unionville, Indian Trail and along the Stateline/U.S. 601 South corridor. On Aug. 28 Union County Sherriff officers apprehended James Lee Clark, 33, and Jami Renea Cowell, 27, - both of 233 Wilkes Dr. in Monroe.

Early literary station comes to Waxhaw Library Association

More storms, heavy rain develop across Charlotte area

Drenching thunderstorms developed for the second straight day Thursday across the Charlotte area, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory for parts of Mecklenburg and Union counties. After storms dumped about 3 inches of rain and caused flash flooding Wednesday evening in Charlotte's uptown and northwest side, the hot and humid air mass over the Carolinas began producing more rain Thursday afternoon.

Union, Newton-Conover top area graduation rates

The Union County Schools had the highest percentage of high school seniors graduating in 2014 among systems in the Charlotte region, according to statistics released Thursday by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. A close second was the Newton-Conover district, as 16 of 23 systems in the region surpassed the statewide rate of 83.8 percent.
