A Turner County jailer was shaken but not seriously injured Thursday morning when an inmate he was transporting to a Tifton doctor's appointment allegedly got out of his handcuffs and attempted to escape the patrol car.

A Turner county inmate got out of his handcuffs and attacked a jailer Thursday. 23-year-old Jose Galban-Venancio had a doctor's appointment in Tifton.

A deputy is believed to have received only minor injuries when a prisoner he was transporting from the Turner County jail to a doctor's appointment in Tifton Thursday morning overpowered him in an attempt to escape.

22-year-old Rito Gomez of Turner County died last night in a Baton Rouge Hospital.
