Southampton man drops civil rights suit against Suffolk DA Spota

A Southampton man whose 2011 drug conviction was overturned amid a probe of the Southampton Town Police Department has dropped his lawsuit against Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota. Kwame Opoku's attorney wrote a letter to U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Bianco on Thursday saying he didn't want to pursue the case.

Man Wanted for Shoplifting from Medford Pharmacy

September 16th, 2014 - Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public's help to identify and locate the man who stole headphones from a Medford store earlier this month. A man entered Walgreens, located at 2850 Route 112, and stole three pairs of Hype Bluetooth headphones on September 3 at approximately 9:30 a.m. The headphones have a combined value of approximately $150.

A motorcycle crash briefly closed the westbound HOV lane of the Long Island Expressway between Exit 51, Deer Park Avenue, and Exit 50, Bagatelle Road, in Dix Hills on Tuesday, police and state officials said. The crash occurred at 6:07 a.m., Suffolk County police said.

Threats made against two Suffolk County high schools -- one in Mount Sinai, the other in West Islip -- resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old student in one case, while police are continuing to investigate the other on Tuesday, police said. 3 arrested in North Lindenhurst burglaries

Three North Lindenhurst residents pulled off a series of burglaries in their community over a two-month span, Suffolk County police said Tuesday. The three were arrested Monday on multiple charges, as First Squad detectives and Crime Control officers conducted a surveillance operation designed to identify the suspects in a "several" daytime residential burglaries, according to a news release.

Middle Island Man, Scott Shea, 30, Charged in Hit and Run Crash That Injured Girl Riding in Stroller

Suffolk County Police today arrested a Middle Island man that left the scene of a crash that injured a 3-year-old girl. Scott Shea, 30, was driving a 2005 Jeep northbound on William Floyd Parkway, south of Montauk Highway, when he struck a 3-year-old girl that was riding in a stroller.

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

September 15, 2014 - The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 21,980 new cases of ovarian cancer and approximately 14,270 deaths due to ovarian cancer in the United States in 2014. According to the New York State Health Department, there are approximately 129 new cases and 79 deaths due to ovarian cancer in Suffolk County each year.

Suffolk County Legislature Unanimously Approves Rails to Trails Fund Allocation

September 2014 - The federally funded Port Jefferson-Wading River Rails to Trails appropriation of funds for the planning, engineering and construction was unanimously approved by the Suffolk County Legislature at the September 9th Meeting of the full Legislature. The 10 mile green trail project, which started over 15 years ago, will proceed to the design stage.

Cops: Man Stole from Huntington Mosque Donation Box

A man damaged and stole from a donation box at a Huntington Mosque in August, and police are seeking the public's help in identifying and finding him, authorities said Monday. Suffolk County Police say a man entered Masjid Noor, located at 1032 Park Ave., pried open a donation box with a hammer and stole money from the box on Aug. 27 at about 11 a.m. The man then fled on foot.

Firefighters battle blaze at multimillion-dollar Sagaponack home

Volunteers from five East End fire departments responded to the scene of a structure fire Monday morning at a multimillion-dollar home in Sagaponack, fire officials said. The fire at the home on Sagaponack Main Street was reported at about 6 a.m., Suffolk County fire officials said.

Cops: DWI arrest after driver crashes into bushes outside Deer Park home

A 29-year-old Dix Hills man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after police said he crashed his car into bushes early Monday outside a house in Deer Park, Suffolk County police said. Police said the crash occurred near the intersection of Straight Path and Nantucket Lane at 1:22 a.m. There were no reported injuries.

Special Grand Jury to Investigate Toxic Islip Dumping

A special grand jury will join the investigation into illegal, toxic dumping in and around the Town of Islip, with authorization to expand the exploration beyond Islip and into Suffolk County. The grand jury was convened by the Suffolk District Attorney's Office and authorized to commence work on September 10, according to published accounts.

Man shot in the knee in Bay Shore, police say

A man was shot in the knee as he stood on a street in Bay Shore on Saturday, Suffolk County police said. The man, who was not identified, was on Belford Avenue when he was shot in the knee by an unknown assailant just before 8 p.m., police said.

A Copiague man answering a knock at his front door was shot through the door early Sunday morning in what Suffolk County police said was a targeted attack. Police said Aaron Goodman, 30, heard a knock at the door of his home on Dixon Avenue just after midnight on Sunday.

Central Islip bicyclist hit by car, killed

A man riding his bicycle in Central Islip Saturday was killed after he was hit by a car, Suffolk County police said. Marlon Santos, 27, of Central Islip, was riding on his bicycle on Joshuas Path at about 10:14 p.m. when he was hit by a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero, police said.
