Birds are imperiled. Give 'em a fighting chance

A mother loon and her two babies cruised the waters of Lake Elora in St. Louis County shortly after they hatched and left their nest. Maryland could lose the flashy orange-and-black Baltimore oriole - its state bird and the mascot of its Major League Baseball team - before the end of this century because of global warming.

Man Arrested in Duluth Aggravated Robbery Early Saturday

Duluth Police say a 28-year old man was taken to the St. Louis County Jail on aggravated robbery and auto theft charges after he allegedly robbed Casa Motel in Duluth with a handgun early Saturday morning. Duluth Police said they responded to 923 E. Central Entrance Drive around 12:38 a.m. Saturday on reports of an aggravated robbery.

Duluth: Judge to rule on releasing information in priest sex abuse cases

With a trial just months away, the Diocese of Duluth went to court Thursday in an attempt to prevent the potential public release of decades' worth of documents and depositions of top church officials related to priest sex abuse cases. Two alleged abuse victims are suing the diocese, and their attorneys have made it clear that they intend to release documents and depositions that are obtained during the pre-trial discovery process -- a plan that has drawn sharp criticism from attorneys for the diocese.

Priest sex abuse case heard by St. Louis County Judge

A case involving the documents of priests who have been accused of child sex abuse was heard in St. Louis County Court on Thursday. The diocese is asking for a protective order over the documents, which would contain the names of priests along with dates, times and places where they worked and who they allegedly abused.

Minnesota homeowners could be eligible for credit refund

The Homestead Credit Refund is a state-paid refund that helps homeowners whose property taxes are high compared to their household income. The Minnesota Department of Revenue recently sent out a letter to homeowners it's identified as likely being eligible for a refund of $1,000 or more.

Duluth Woman Accused of Welfare Fraud

A Duluth woman is accused of fraudulently obtaining thousands of dollars in public assistance and unemployment insurance while she was working at a Brainerd resort. Andrea H. Pollard, 31, is faces felony charges of wrongfully obtaining general assistance, food stamps and medical assistance, as well as theft by swindle.

Rescue Squad Responds to Several Calls Reporting Distant Cries for Help Near Orr Friday

The St. Louis County Volunteer Rescue Squad was searching the area near the Vermillion River in Portage Township Friday after several people reported hearing distant cries for help, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department. Authorities said the rescue squad searched the Buyck area 15 miles east of Orr by water and land for nearly five hours beginning around 11:51 a.m. Friday.

Chisholm Man Being Treated After Stabbing in Rural Hibbing

A 39-year old Chisholm man is being treated for non-life threatening injuries after authorities said he was stabbed near Hibbing early Saturday morning. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said they believed an argument lead to the incident that happened at a residence on Luna Lake, 20 miles north of Hibbing, at 12:41 a.m. Saturday.

DNR to Auction Northern Minnesota Land Oct. 9

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is holding a land auction on Oct. 9. The DNR says plans to offer 30 parcels, all located in northern Minnesota. The parcels range in size from a half acre to 102 acres and offer opportunities for hunting and recreation, as well as cabin and residential development along prime lakeshore.

St. Paul City Attorney: Not My Job to Second Guess Cop's Decision

As prosecutors in St. Louis county continue to investigate the shooting of an unarmed Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer, some people are concerned the elected county prosecutor, Bob McCulloch, won't pursue the case fairly. Some activists have called for his removal , citing a history that suggests a pro-cop bias; his father was a cop killed in the line of duty and one of his first cases in the early 1990s involved defending police officers that shot and killed two unarmed men while undercover by stressing the victims were alleged drug dealers.
