A bit of rain and four more aircraft helped Michigan authorities in their attempts to contain a wildfire that has consumed 31.6 square miles of Upper Peninsula forest and destroyed at least 61 buildings, an official said Sunday.

A wildfire in Michigan's Upper Peninsula grew by 17 percent to more than 21,000 acres Saturday as officials warned of tough conditions and welcomed help from water-dumping aircraft from the Michigan National Guard.

It happened Thursday night around 6:30 p.m. at a home on Ritchie Road near Hockaday Road in Butman Township.

AAA estimates more than a 1 million people will be on the road for the three-day weekend.

The Duck Lake Wildfire burning in northern Luce County is now at 21,100 acres. As of Saturday morning, it is still out of control.

More than 20,000 acres have burned in Luce and Schoolcraft Counties. An outdoor burn ban is in place for several WOOD Radio listening area counties.

A fast-moving wildfire in the Upper Peninsula burned early Friday, consuming at least 9,500 acres, or nearly 15 square miles, and prompting evacuations as dry conditions aided the blaze, officials said.

Officials say two wildfires believed to have been triggered by lightning have consumed thousands of acres in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, aided by dry conditions and gusty winds.

A fire in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge is threatening to burn across the refuge's northern boundary onto state-managed land.
