An elk restoration project has begun in southwest Virginia. More than 200 spectators watched the transfer of 11 elk to a 5-acre holding pen on a reclaimed strip mine site Friday in Buchanan County.

Two homes in Russell County, Virginia went up in flames Thursday night and crews rushed to put out the fires.

The historic Pratt mansion, in Rosedale, Va., caught fire around 6:15 p.m. as a string of lightning-producing storms rolled through the area, said Russell County Sheriff's Office Deputy Major Bill Watson.

The Russell County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting into a home.

Police say this is just one of several cases being investigated; Russell County, Virginia investigators say they've seen a spike in the number of sexual abuse cases.
