Quay County unemployment rate rises almost 2 %

Quay County's unemployment rate for June 2014 was 6.6%, up almost two percentage points from May's rate of 4.70%, but down a half of a percentage point from June 2013's rate of 7.1 percent, according to a press release from the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions.

Fire destroys Tucumcari hotel

A Hampton Inn hotel in the Route 66 town of Tucumcari, New Mexico, was destroyed after fire swept through its roof and top floors Wednesday, reported the Quay County Sun and other news outlets.

Dispatch tax goes to voters

Quay County voters will decide on Sept. 16 whether to enact a 0.12-percent gross receipts tax to fund an independent county area emergency communications system to replace the current system managed day-to-day by the city of Tucumcari.

Bidegain case moving to Tenth District Court

Tenth Judicial District Attorney Tim Rose plans to file a case in Tenth Judicial District Court against Scott Bidegain and two other defendants in the unlawful hunting case against them, after he dismisses the case in Quay County Magistrate Court.

Herds may not increase despite rain

Reductions in cattle herds have followed the drought in Quay County, and even as normal rainfall seems to have returned for at least the summer, herds are down further, and they aren't likely to grow this year.

People gathered along the street Saturday in Logan to watch the annual Fourth of July parade.

Increased water levels and favorable weather conditions at Ute Lake and Conchas Lake state parks drew more than 49,000 visitors for the Fourth of July weekend to the Quay County area, according to Jim Winchester, New Mexico State Parks public information officer.

County approves tax, burn measures

As expected, the Quay County Commission on Friday gave preliminary approval of an ordinance that will require voter approval of a new gross receipts tax to pay the lion's share of operating costs of the county's emergency radio dispatch system.
