Our View: Teaming up to address flooding; Regional approach could...

A regional approach to dealing with stormwater runoff and maintenance of streams in Portage and Summit counties could provide an effective solution to the problem as well as a cost-saver for communities affected by flooding. The Portage/Summit Mayors, Managers and Service Directors, a group of officials from western Portage County and eastern Summit County, is planning to do watershed mapping to assist in stormwater management efforts.

Fatal crash closes stretch of U.S. 422 in Portage County

Police say a fatal car crash on U.S. Route 422 in Portage County will keep a stretch of the highway closed for much of Friday morning. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. Friday when a driver traveling eastbound veered off to the right side of the highway and struck a tree.

Tornado tears through Portage County, damages homes

A half-dozen homes in Mantua Village in Portage County were damaged Wednesday when a tornado touched down around 5:30 p.m. Workers removed an estimated 30,000-pound tree off Lauren and Randy Weaver's home Thursday morning in the 4000 block of West Prospect Street. Neighbors gathered around their home to watch as workers spent five hours cutting down and chopping up the tree.

Portage County officials, NWS, to investigate three possible tornados hitting area

Portage County officials say they are investigating the possibility that two spin-off tornadoes formed after a suspected tornado came into the area from Stow . Portage County Emergency Management Agency Director Ryan Shackleford said he received reports of three different suspected tornado sightings stemming from the Wednesday evening storm.

National Weather Service investigating suspected Summit County tornado

National Weather Service inspectors will spend the day in Summit and Portage counties to analyze damage caused by a suspected tornado. NWS Cleveland Meteorologist-in-Charge William Comeaux said an inspector will start in Stow, where it appears the worst damage occurred .

Aurora to pay $10 more per ton for salt; others face much higher prices

Although many area communnities are seeing a dramatic rise in road salt prices for attacking snowfall this winter, Aurora is in pretty good shape, according to Service Director John Trew. Portage County Engineer Michael Marozzi said this year's bid from Morton Salt is $108 per ton, a 400 percent increase over last year's price.

Portage County's jobless numbers ticked up in July, climbing to 5.3 percent from 5.2 percent in June, according to statistics released recently by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. It was the second month of increase since May's 4.8 percent rate.

Harry Jacob guilty on five counts; Cuyahoga Falls murder...

Bedford Municipal Court Judge Harry Jacob III has been found guilty of five misdemeanors, three counts of soliciting and two counts of falsification. Stow Municipal Court officials postponed the initial court appearance for a man accused of stabbing a Cuyahoga Falls mother to death after he became belligerent and violent with jail deputies.

State education department slams Portage education center

The state education department has accused the Portage County Educational Service Center of misleading parents, taxpayers and teachers by trying to open an unauthorized charter school in the Cincinnati area by using a defunct Youngstown-area school's state identification number to open a school more than 250 miles away in Hamilton County.
