Uncovering Westminster's Underground Secret

by Nicky Piszczor NEW WILMINGTON / LAWRENCE COUNTY-- Beneath the lower side of the manicured Westminster Quad lies a forgotten passageway. Buried under the sidewalks and the lawn is a piece of the institution's past that offered a link for the women who once lived in Browne and Ferguson halls. It's a college landmark of sorts despite most students today have no idea it exists. As for the students who do know about the Westminster Tunnel, it is still a mystery that has become the inspiration for some creative imaginations. Stories of the tunnel have cropped up over the years suggesting the now forbidden underpass is haunted. The Westminster Tunnel was actually built in 1941. It's purpose was to connect utilities between the Browne and Ferguson residence halls. However, those facts seem to remain buried like the tunnel itself as today's students enjoy sharing their speculations of what remains sealed behind the tunnel's metal doors. Titan Radio's Nicky Piszczor takes us down the steps and behind the locked tunnel doors into the passageway itself to discover its secrets. You can listen to Nicky's special TITAN RADIO ONLINE report with this link here.

Winter Weather Closes Westminster College

NEW WILMINGTON / LAWRENCE COUNTY-- Wednesday's wintery weather conditions prompted Westminster College officials to close the institution for the day. Westminster College Dean Jess Mann cited the adverse weather conditions behind the cancellation of classes. Faculty as well as all non-essential employees were notified by email early in the morning that they would not be needed on campus. It is rare for Westminster to close because of weather as most of the college population lives on campus. However, driving conditions and changing precipitation of rain to snow made roads in and around New Wilmington difficult to navigate safely. Meanwhile several local school districts, including Wilmington Area and Mohawk schools also closed while a few others operated on a two-hour delay. Some roadways such as Route 19 in parts of Plain Grove, Scott and Washington townships presented drivers with a problem of drifting snow blocking parts of the highway, despite efforts by PennDOT trucks to keep those areas cleared. Similar conditions confronted drivers on back roads like State Route 956 in Hickory, Washington and Wilmington townships where the snow from fields created minor drifts as well.

New Wilmington Sells Cable System to Armstrong

The Borough of New Wilmington has sold its cable television system to Butler-based Armstrong Cable for a price of $2.5 million. The borough council approved the deal in a 5 to 1 vote on Monday night. A recommendation from a cable consultant firm informed the council it would cost hundred of thousands of dollars to upgrade the system for digital and high-definition television as mandated by the FCC. New Wilmington had entertained a bid from Comcast late last year, but that $2 million offer expired. The New Wilmington cable television and Internet provider system serves nearly 1,000 customers in town. Armstrong's General Manager Joe Taylor say it could be several months before the details of the sale are worked out, but he indicates his company is eager to bring digital upgrades, high-definition channels and new choices for telephone service to New Wilmington customers. Taylor also offers encouragement to Westminster's Cable Network as Armstrong encourages local programming. "We're already in a number of small college towns like New Wilmington," Taylor said. "We serve Slippery Rock, Grove City and we're even down in California, Pennsylvania."
