New Calif. law gives bicyclists 3 feet of space

Cars pass a bicyclist on Sixth Street in Eureka on Tuesday. California drivers must stay at least 3 feet away from bicyclists when passing them under a new state law that went into effect Tuesday.

Humboldt County supervisors approve 10 percent increase in trash collection rates for seniors

The corners on the county side of Harrison Avenue at Erie Street may get bigger red zones for driver vision and safety. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve a 10 percent increase in trash collection rates for seniors in the unincorporated Eureka area - half of Recology Humboldt County's original proposal.

Authorities to offer free car seat checkups in Eureka

Multiple law enforcement agencies will gather in the Target parking lot Friday and offer free car seat checkups to make sure they are properly installed. "The Humboldt County Child Passenger Seat Coalition - which is made up of Humboldt Bay Fire, Arcata Fire Protection District, Arcata and Eureka police, CHP, DHHS and Humboldt EMS - will have car seat technicians available to check car seats," Harvey said.

Broadband vandals could see $10,000 fine

A bill developed by Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown increases fines for cutting communication lines to 20 times what they once were, according to a press release from Chesbro's office. "The residents of Humboldt County have been the victim of multiple intentional fiber cutting attacks in recent years, causing disruptions of broadband service to thousands of homes and businesses," Chesbro said in the press release.

Sheriff's office seizes 3,500 pot plants during Salmon Creek Road investigation

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office seized 3,500 growing marijuana plants, cash and 283 pounds of processed marijuana buds during an investigation on Salmon Creek Road. On Monday at about 9 a.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit served a Humboldt County Superior Court search warrant on a parcel of land on Salmon Creek Road.

Sheriff's office shuffles patrols

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office says it has shuffled its patrol schedule to better cover problem areas, responding to complaints of rising vagrancy in Southern Humboldt. "We began the effort in response to complaints from the more rural areas of the county because there have been less resources available due to reduced budgets and revenue for the department," Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey said.

Starting Monday, local young people will be celebrating healthy living in a week-long wellness event. The Humboldt County Transition-Age Youth Collaboration's Youth Advisory Board will kick off its second annual "Wellness Week," designed for both fun and education, and as the organization's most-important outreach effort of the year.

Arcata woman arrested in stolen vehicle Saturday night; officers find she has additional warrants

An Arcata woman with outstanding warrants was arrested driving a stolen vehicle in the Valley West section of the city Saturday night. According to Arcata Police Department officials, Bernelle Fay Perkins, 46, was taken into custody and booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for possession of stolen property after she was pulled over at about 9:20 p.m. An officer recognized the stolen vehicle, a Ford Bronco, driving in the Valley West area.

Two arrested for burglary in Arcata

On 9/15/2014 at about 1:05am, officers from the Arcata Police Department were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a residence in the 500 block of F Street. Upon the arrival of officer's minutes later, a male subject was located passed out on a chair on the front porch of the residence.

Shopping cart ordinance before Eureka City Council

The Eureka City Council is set to vote on an abandoned shopping cart ordinance at its Tuesday meeting that would lay out punishment for theft as well as require several businesses within the city to submit theft prevention plans lest they face citations by the city. A previous draft of the ordinance would have required businesses with 25 or more shopping carts to place the name of the cart owner, phone number, and information stating how theft of a cart is a violation of state law on each of the shopping carts.

Redwood Prep receives $20,000 grant

Redwood Preparatory Charter School in Fortuna has announced that they will now be implementing more science, technology, engineering and math through a program called Project Lead the Way . "Redwood Prep is the first school in Humboldt County to be able to implement these courses," Redwood Preparatory School Director Lisa Jager said in the release.

Humboldt County's 'Murder Mountain' In Marijuana Country Living Up To Its Name

Marijuana sales nationwide are estimated to hit $104 billion this year, and a lot of it is coming from California's Emerald Triangle of Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties. It's not like the old hippy days any more according to residents, especially on a place they call "Murder Mountain."
