State Removes Historic Pillars In Avon Mountain Upgrade

Two sets of historic pillars, at least one dating to the 19th century, have fallen victim to the fate of progress on Avon Mountain.

The Department of Transportation, which is improving safety on the mountain following a deadly crash in 2005, dismantled the pillars on Deercliff and Montevideo roads last month.

The plans for the mountain include a median along the major curves, said David Ferraro, DOT project engineer in construction.

The pillars on Deercliff Road were in the right of way and replaced by a storm sewer. And the pillars by the old entrance to Montevideo Road were dismantled so a curve could be softened. A third set of columns, opposite the entrance to Parsons Way, were left untouched.

This is news? Who cares about a pile of stones. If this is all Konover and his wealthy neighbors have to worry about, they should trade places with the rest of us. Next David Chase will be complaining about it. Must be another slow news day at the Courant.

It's called progress, but where does it stop? Build and build and then change the roads to handle the extra traffic. Hopefully, gas at $4.50 a gallon will change the trend.

i think historical structures like this should be left intact as much as possible. the dot does not have a good track record in this dept. among others

a storm drain just had to be put at the precise point where some of these pillars stood. i doubt it. either this issue was not brought up, i.e. kept secret, at public hearings or people did not speak up.

another whimsical piece of the past falls needlessly and robs the future of connections to its ancestors. sad.

You are a sad token of the new Hartford. The old Hartford was better.

Hard to believe the crash happened in 2005. I know this kind of process takes extensive planning but 3 years? Screw the pillars you whiny millionaires, make this suicide hill safer.

i am sure the residents of these exclusive streets can well afford to pony up the money to rebuild them, further back from rt.44, if they "care" so much about them!

I live on the Avon side of the mountain and was sad to see them go. I guess it had to happen though, the DOT is dumber then a box of rocks...their solution to everything is more pavement.

Next up for the DOT - building the Hartford - New Britain BUSway. What a joke.

The whole area is becoming more built up than people want it to be... just vote yes for the Hoffman project...nothing is going to take away from the value of the homes in this area

Avon should have never allowed the beautiful view of Avon mountain from the valley to be sullied with gaudy mansions for everyone to see.

You are right, and this is what I hate about the forums. There are lot of people who live to argue with courant stories or the subjects of them. It is a way for the pathetic to feel somehow important. "Bah, that's a terrible story!"
"Bah, the person who took down the stone is an idiot!"
"Bah, the stones are idiotic!"
"Bah, Avon Mountain is an idiotic mountain!"
"Bah, I love to complain!"

I really don't think this is a new feature of Hartford. I think it is a voice for those grumpy negative people we usually don't have to listen to, but now they have a voice in the topic forums.

What I find amusing is that although the pillars are historic no one could place who really built them? Kind of odd if you ask me.

And to the poster who noted Avon is built out right on! This is one of the major reasons why the project most likely had to take place. Towns never consider their infrastructure before allowing residential development. Residents have to get to work, school, stores. You allow uncontrolled construction like Avon did over the last 10 years and the traffic has to go somewhere.

Build it bigger for those who just HAVE to get somewhere five minutes early after leaving ten minutes late.

Spend our money...

RIGHT ON!!!! You know the road would be fine if people stick to the speed limit and slower in inclement weather.
