Fla. woman dies after balcony fall

“The other half are intentional situations.”

A Largo, Fla., woman died Monday morning after falling from a 16th-floor hotel balcony to a roof covering a pool.

Bonnie Hoff, 54, died Monday at the Sands Ocean Club Resort, said Horry County Coroner Robert Edge. She was found by a hotel guest, who alerted hotel security, authorities said. The investigation into what caused her fall continued late Monday.

An autopsy is scheduled for today, Edge said.

With an influx of tourists expected in the coming weeks, authorities realize the likelihood of falls will increase. Read more

Murrells Inlet: Mi 2007 loses county funds for fireworks

“That's one of the largest single events that draws people to Murrells Inlet. It's just incredible to go down and see that the marshwalk is covered with people”

Community group Murrells Inlet 2007 will need to raise $15,000 in order to keep its annual July Fourth fireworks show going because of the recent rejection from the Georgetown County Council of an accommodations tax request.

In previous years, the group has been able to rely on the county coming up with about half of the money for the event, which attracts about 35,000 visitors to the area each year.

But with the county diverting most accommodations tax funds for infrastructure and visitor services, that money is no longer available to promote and fund local events. Read more

City offers residents the chance to recycle

Starting Monday the city of Myrtle Beach will distribute blue plastic recycling bins to those homes that have been recycling using blue plastic bags, which is about 30 percent of the city's solid waste customers, said city spokesman Mark Kruea.

The bins will go out on the same schedule as garbage pick-ups next week. Kruea said the city hopes more people will recycle, and will give a small bin to any city resident who requests one. Read more

High hopes for marine complex

“He used to say there were conservationists, preservationists, environmentalists, and then there were people who weren't anything who would destroy the world”

Administrators, legislators and local county officials are projecting that a new $5.8 million marine complex will be an economic boon for Georgetown County, drawing hundreds of people each year for fishing tournaments.

The Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex - expected to open by June 2009 - will feature six boat ramps, a convenience ramp for unloading and loading supplies, a 200-spot parking lot, bathrooms, vendor space and an event stage. It is on the west side of U.S. 17, on the south side of the river across from the International Paper Co. Read more

Georgetown schools rethink class times

“We need to discuss the pros and cons of this openly and try to see if there is any way of unraveling what we got unless we find out it's the best thing. There have to be some modifications that can be made to the system.”

Ninety minutes may be too long to expect students to sit in a classroom, one parent told the Georgetown County Board of Education Tuesday night.

In response to the woman's concerns, the school board decided to re-examine its 90-minute class period at the high school level.

The matter will appear on the board's April 15 agenda.

'I just think it needs to be revisited and possible modifications could be made to the system,' said Donna Watkins, a parent of three children, including one who will be a high school freshman in the coming school year. Read more

EDITORIAL: School Politics

As part of its recent voting-rights settlement with the U.S. Justice Department, candidates for the Georgetown County Board of Education will run on a nonpartisan basis, beginning this year. No longer will school board ballots identify school board candidates as Republicans and Democrats.

This is OK. But in comparison with the main issue the Justice Department sought to address in forcing this change in the school-board electoral system, partisanship - let's face it - was a side issue.

The main issue, of course, was that the county's at-large school board voting system has tended, in recent years, to disenfranchise black voters. Under the settlement, which will take effect once the S.C. General Assembly 'blesses' it, seven of the nine Georgetown County school board members will serve schoolchildren from single-member districts. Those districts will be drawn from the County Council district map. Only two school board members will be elected at large - by all county voters. Read more
