Crab harvest rules aired

“What they're proposing to do to us would be like asking Ocean City to give up July, their prime time”

Nearly 200 watermen packed the pavilion at Sailwinds Park last night to hear details of new harvest rules that they fear will ruin commercial fishermen whose business depends in large part on catching female blue crabs, the Chesapeake Bay's signature fishery.

The number of crabs has dropped so sharply that Maryland and Virginia imposed restrictions last month that are aimed at reducing the annual harvest of females by one-third.

About half of the blue crabs harvested in Maryland waters are females, officials say, and many are caught in warm fall waters. Read more

Well boo-hoo for those poor water men. What is it that they think they'll do if they take all the crabs that they want and in a few years there aren't any? I got laid off six months ago when the company that I worked for was bought, but there isn't any federal tax money being spent to make a new job for me. The water men need to realize that there are a finite number of crabs in the bay, and that no one "owes" them (the water men) anything.

I hear ya !!
It reminds me of horse racing. It's dying out so they want slots to help keep it going. So you'll have thousands of people playing the slots and the same old crowd playing the ponies, let it go already ...

I agree with "Reasonable Adult"! There has always been the mentality of "lets get all we can now". The watermen will survive, they always do. They will have to cut back on buying a new truck or boat each year, like the rest of us do.
