A Clearfield couple has been jailed for allegedly stealing an assault rifle from the Bob's Army & Navy store, according to the Clearfield Borough police. Police received a complaint about the alleged theft of an AK-47 assault rifle that occurred on or about Sept.

Fugitive of the Week: Paul William Witherite
District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. has announced Clearfield County's Fugitive of the Week for the week of Sept. 15. Shaw identified the fugitive as Paul William Witherite, 27, of McAteer Street, Houtzdale.
Man Sentenced to State Prison in Overdose Death
A Millerton man will spend up to 10 years in state prison for supplying heroin to a man who died of an overdose. Ryan Seth Ray, 25, 7 Pine Hill Dr., Millerton, pleaded guilty to drug delivery resulting in death, involuntary manslaughter, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.

Ex-students fondly remember one-room schoolhouses
Mildred English, 87, sat in a desk at the Frenchville School, a one-room schoolhouse in rural Clearfield County, drinking coffee out of a foam cup and remembering the metal cup she used for drinking water when she was a student at a nearby one-room school. "The boys took a bucket to a farmer down the road to get water for the class, and we each had a tin cup that hung on a nail on the wall," English said.

Woman to stand trial for stealing from late mother
By Jeff Corcino Staff Writer Deborah Hilliard, 57, of DuBois, who is accused of stealing from her late mother, had all charges bound over for court following a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins yesterday in DuBois. Hilliard is accused of stealing her mother, Bertha Smeltzer's retirement money and using Smeltzer's Discover credit card for her own personal purposes instead of using them to pay for her mother's care at the DuBois Nursing Home and pay her prescription drug costs.
Ales for Tails Slated or Oct. 4
Ales for Tails, a craft beer tasting event to benefit the Clearfield County SPCA, will be held from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Expo II Building at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds. Event tickets are $20 each and entitle the holder to a sampling of craft beers.
AARP Safe Driving Courses Available
The Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging Inc., in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons , is offering area individuals aged 50 and older the opportunity to take the AARP Driver Safety Program course. The classroom course was developed by AARP to help drivers remain safe on today's roads while providing the bonus of a three-year discount on the eligible course graduates' car insurance.

County to Request Updated Reptile Study at Proposed Boggs Twp. Landfill Site

A former office manager accused of stealing more than $107,000 from Walter Hopkins and Company LLP of Clearfield waived her right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail. Jonelle S. Smeal, 47, of Woodland has been charged with multiple counts of theft by unlawful taking; theft by deception; forgery; access device issued to another who did not authorize use; other reason access device is unauthorized by issuer; and receiving stolen property; and then tampering with records or ID-writing.

Commissioners Approve RCAP Extension for Pennsylvania Grain Processing
The Clearfield County Commissioners approved a one-year extension to its RCAP grant agreement with Pennsylvania Grain Processing, which has plans to improve its facilities. During board discussion, Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen noted this was the third time the county has awarded an RCAP extension for these monies.
County Supports Coal Industry
Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners supported their local coal industry by calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider its proposed Clean Power Plant rule. Further, the commissioners called for the EPA to either withdraw its proposed CPP rule, or to revise it to eliminate the "economic shocks" expected to occur in critical coalfield communities across the country.
