Travelers' victims in Bedford County recount swindling

When a married couple arrived at Arlene Newman's Breezewood home two weeks ago, telling of the wife's struggle with cancer and offering to pave their driveway for $3,900, Newman and her husband thought they'd come upon a great deal. By Tuesday, the husband, 55-year-old John William Burke of North Augusta, S.C., was in jail, accused of at least four separate thefts and 12 felonies in a string of alleged fake paving jobs throughout Bedford County.

ACLU: Statue desecration case has serious issues

The American Civil Liberties Union is expressing interest in the case of an Everett 14-year-old charged with "desecrating" a statue of Jesus. On Thursday, a Pittsburgh-based ACLU attorney said the state law cited in the case - a rarely invoked ban on "defacing, damaging, polluting or ... mistreating" venerated symbols - poses constitutional problems.

Police say teen mimicked sex act

An Everett teenager faces a misdemeanor charge for allegedly "desecrating" a statue of Jesus outside a religious center in his hometown, an act that drew violent threats online. In a report issued Tuesday, state police said the 14-year-old boy posted photographs of the desecration on the Internet.
