Softball roundup: Stavola's 1,000 strikeouts an LI first
Jessie Stavola struck out eight and walked two in a no-hitter as East Hampton edged Shoreham-Wading River, 1-0, in a League VI softball game Thursday.
With the eight strikeouts, Stavola became the first Long Island pitcher to eclipse the 1,000-strikeout plateau. Stavola, who has six no-hitters this season, has 1,002 career strikeouts. Megan Hess scored Nicole Fierro with a single in the first inning to give East Hampton (14-1) a 1-0 lead. Nicole DelleDonne struck out seven and scattered six hits in a complete game for Shoreham-Wading River.
Sachem East 2, Patchogue-Medford 1: Samantha Smith scored on Julia DeCarmine's sacrifice fly in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie for Sachem East (13-3 League I). DeCarmine pitched a three-hitter, walked none and struck out seven.
Brentwood 1, Ward Melville 0: Alexa Santiago homered in the bottom of the sixth for Brentwood (13-3) in League I. Nicole Flint threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
Bayport-Blue Point 1, Southampton 0: Meg Brewer threw a three-hitter, walked one and struck out 10 for Bayport-Blue Point (9-4) in League VII. Hailey Tucker beat a throw to home on a ground ball by Carly Taitz to give Bayport the lead in the third. Kirsten Smith allowed a run on seven hits for Southampton.
Oyster Bay 4, Hewlett 0: Kerri Apicella threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and two walks for host Oyster Bay (12-5). Jill Gannon's RBI double scored Emily Abbate in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Oyster Bay a 1-0 lead.
Plainedge 7, South Side 4: Theresa Magnani's grand slam with two outs in the top of the seventh gave Plainedge (16-0) a 7-4 lead. Kat Keyes went 2-for-2 with two runs, April Delligatti had two hits and a run and Sam Daubman had two hits and two RBIs.
Valley Stream Central 11, Elmont 0: Katie Guarneri struck out six and walked two for her second no-hitter of the season for Valley Stream Central. Kathleen Faust had two hits, including a three-homer in the top of the fifth, to give VSC a 6-0 lead.
New Hyde Park 10, Friends Academy 6: Christina Burkey, Samantha Flaum and Danielle Sawicki hit consecutive solo home runs in the first inning for New Hyde Park (8-2). Sawicki was 3-for-4 with a double, Flaum went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Burkey hit another home run in the top of the sixth that made the score 9-5.
Roosevelt 14, Great Neck North 2: Maurica Charles struck out 10 and walked two in a two-hitter to lead Roosevelt. Sherrell Kennedy went 3-for-4 with two runs and a walk.
Valley Stream North 17, Wheatley 11: Sara Adamo hit a three-run single in the top of the 11th inning to give Valley Stream North (5-12) the win in Conference ABC-IV. Adamo had six RBIs. Valerie Scaglione went 4-for-7 with three runs and five RBIs, including a solo homer in the sixth inning to give Valley Stream North an 8-7 lead.
St. John the Baptist 5, St. Anthony's 0: Olivia Galati struck out 17 and walked none in a one-hitter for St. John the Baptist (13-1) in CHSAA. Liz Spiller went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the second.
Lawrence Woodmere Academy 7, Our Savior New American 6: Brittany Loweree's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Jestina Collins to break a 6-6 tie for host Lawrence Woodmere (4-6) in IPPSAL.
