Jury awards $3.2 million in wrongful death at apartment complex
The estate of a father of four gunned down in 2007 outside his sister's West Palm Beach apartment has been awarded $3.2 million.
A Palm Beach County jury found that Haverhill Affordable Housing and Picerne Management, the owner and management company for Saddlebrook apartments, should pay damages for the wrongful death of Corey Beckford.
Jurors found that the property management company failed to properly protect its residents, according to plaintiff's attorney Richard Ryles.
Beckford, 32, was shot and killed shortly after midnight on April 10, 2007.
A suspect was arrested a short time later after committing an armed robbery.
It was not the first homicide at Saddlebrook, an affordable housing complex off Caribbean Boulevard.
In 2005, a masked gunman killed 25-year-old Darelle Parson and injured his 9-year-old daughter.
A representative with Picerne Management could not be immediately reached for comment despite an attempt by telephone.
Jurors deliberated for three days before reaching a decision.
