4,200 students in Arundel evacuated after fire
A small flash fire in an Anne Arundel County school kitchen this morning forced the evacuation of about 4,200 students in three schools. There were no injuries, nor any significant structural damage to the industrial kitchen in the sprawling Old Mill schools complex in Millersville, spokesman Bob Mosier said.
The fire started around 10 a.m. while workers were repairing a refrigerator. A hose detached and ignited combustible fumes from a tank in the refrigeration unit, Mosier said.
The Anne Arundel Fire Department was called, Mosier said, and students from Old Mill High School, Old Mill Middle North and Old Mill Middle South were evacuated for 30 minutes as firefighters put out the blaze.
Mosier said county health inspectors were also called to ensure the kitchen was safe for use. The kitchen was cleared for use about 11:30, and lunches were served on an altered schedule beginning at 12:15, he said.
