Hole In Ice A False Alarm
A mysterious hole in the ice on Swan Lake on the University of Connecticut campus prompted a two-hour search by divers and other authorities Saturday morning before authorities determined no one had fallen in.
Campus police on general patrol noticed the hole at about 7:30 a.m., about 30 to 40 feet from shore, UConn police Maj. Ron Blicher said.
Police spotted footprints near the area, prompting concern that someone might have fallen through the ice. The hole was about 6 feet by 3 feet, in a portion of the lake where the water is 6 to 8 feet deep. The ice was about 4 inches thick, Blicher said.
The UConn fire department and the Tolland County Dive Team, which is made up of members of Tolland County fire departments, arrived at the scene, and two divers, assisted by crews not in the water, searched under the ice. They did not find any bodies or indications that anyone had fallen through the ice.
Authorities are seeking information about how the hole got in the ice, Blicher said.
