Magdalena Student Receives National Honor
SOCORRO, New Mexico (STPNS) -- A Magdalena High School student has received a national honor as he was selected to be a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
William Guin, 16, is being recognized for superior academic achievement by the organization, based in Atlanta, Ga.
According to a press release, the announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.
He said Guin is now a member of a unique community of scholars, "a community that represents the very best hope for the future."
"William Guin has demonstrated the commitment and hard work necessary to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence," Nobel said in the release.
Guin, who recently spent a month studying political science and honors English at Yale University, is spending the summer working at the family ranch.
"I like being out there, breaking horses, doing fence work. It's the family trade," he said.
Guin plans to enroll at New Mexico Tech after he graduates from Magdalena. He plans to study either mechanical engineering or political science.
Membership in the NSHSS entitles Guin to enjoy a variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities.
Guin, son of Ruth and Lonnie Guin of Datil, will be entering his junior year at Magdalena High School in the fall.
