SPEARMAN, Texas (STPNS) -- Leigh Ann Winger of Gruver and Jonathan Harder of Perryton won a 9-day, all expense paid trip to Washington, DC as winners of North Plains Electric Cooperative's Government-in-Action Youth Tour contest.
Leigh Anne, a sophomore at Gruver High School, is the daughter of David and Teague Winger. Harder, a junior at Perryton High School, is the son of Loren and Maylene Harder. They will join other young people from Texas who have won similar contests on June 12 in Irving. From there they will fly to Washington, DC.
While in Washington, they will meet other youth from all over the United States and visit many scenic and historic places, including the White House, U.S. Capitol, National Archives, Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Arlington National Cemetery and Mount Vernon. Winger and Harder will also be able to meet with and view their congressmen and senators in action. Their tour will end on June 20.
The two were required to give a five-to-eight minute speech on the subject "Rural Electric Cooperatives - The Power for Better Living."
After their presentation, contestants answered questions about North Plains Electric or rural electric cooperatives in general, posed to them by a panel of judges.
Other contestants included alternate winner Tracey Young, daughter of Craig and Cindy Young of Canadian, and Brittany Bryan, daughter of Kent and Connie Bryan of Darrouzett. Judges included Glenna Hise, Human Resource Specialist and Erin Shurley, Member Service Advisor, both of Tri-County Electric Cooperative, Inc. in Hooker, Oklahoma.
