Wolf Creek Heritage Museum Notes

SPEARMAN, Texas (STPNS) -- Last week, I wrote about Follett Christmas Parade and forgot to talk about the year that the Santa Claus for the Methodist Church appeared and was reported to be extraordinarily "jolly" and the members were concerned and puzzled because Santa appeared unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurry. It appeared that Santa had enjoyed a bit of Christmas cheer prior to his appearance at the church. Upon closed inspection after the children reported that Santa smelled "funny", it was concluded that Santa was "snockered". It is a good thing he appeared at the Methodist Church. Names have been omitted to protect the guilty.
Darrouzett had a special Christmas in 1962. They started the season with raising funds to purchase the Christmas Lights from Perryton out bidding Higgins and Wheatheart shopping center. Mrs. George Miller was instrumental in the raising of the funds, donated a major portion herself. The Kiowa Valley Independent reported that "She came up with the needed money on a one-woman crusade and another project is closer to completion because of individual initiative."
Darrouzett also held a contest for the best decorated home in town.
The annual Santa Day was on December 15 that year with a children race with awards of $25 thru $5. Santa Claus appeared with treats for all the children. Their Turkey Toss was from one of the buildings downtown. The local merchants tossed the turkeys and balloons with prizes and candy.
We sure need to learn the origin of the Turkey Toss. I can't seem to find anyone who remembers how the tradition got started and when it stopped.
