Attempt to get cell phones into correctional facility foiled
LEXINGTON, Mississippi (STPNS) -- November 28, 2007 - Kristie Duncan, 23, of Aberdeen was arrested on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 22, and charged with attempting to get paraphernalia in to the Holmes-Humphreys Correctional Facility located on Hwy. 12 east of Lexington, according to Holmes County Sheriff Willie March.
Sheriff March said a person inside the correctional facility saw a person wearing camouflage attire and holding a large black bag standing outside the gate behind the facility.
The person notified the dispatcher who then called Lexington Police Department and asked to have an officer drive to the facility and see if they could see a car parked nearby.
The Lexington PD officer spotted a vehicle bearing a Monroe County tag parked just off the road near the correctional facility.
A call was placed to the owner asking about his vehicle being in Holmes County. Mr. Duncan said the last person he knew had possession of the vehicle was his wife.
The dispatcher summoned deputies to come to the facility. Shortly after they arrived, the deputies saw a person wearing camouflage coming out of the field south of Hwy. 12.
They discovered a woman who identified herself and reportedly told the deputies that she was a bounty hunter and had gone into the field after the person she was attempting to arrest. (No person was found.)
A call was made to the Leflore County Sheriff's Department for assistance to bring dogs to help track around the facility.
The dog from Leflore County tracked the trail from the direction Mrs. Duncan had appeared and the trail led behind the correctional facility. Deputies found a black bag containing several cell phones and a charger, along with a fifth of whiskey.
Mrs. Duncan was arrested and charged with attempting to get paraphernalia into a correctional facility.
Sheriff March said it is a felony for an inmate to have a cell phone in a correctional facility and a felony to attempt to get a cell phone inside a correctional facility. If convicted, a person in the facility could face from 5 to 10 years in prison for possessing the phone and the person attempting to get the phone inside could receive the same sentence.
As of press time on Tuesday, Mrs. Duncan remained in jail.
