'Between the Lines'
WESTBROOK, Minnesota (STPNS) -- This past weekend Best Friend and I made our annual trek to North Dakota to visit son Jeff at Devils Lake. We also stopped to spend the night with son Jason at Frazee on the way.
When we left Thursday morning it rained continuously all day and night. I told Best Friend on the way "I think we might drive out of this" but after one slight break I concluded that we probably wouldn't drive out of it, at least not on Thursday. The next morning we loaded our bags back into the car (in the rain) and continued our trek north. As we approached Moorhead the rain tapered off then started again. By the time we left Fargo the rain had nearly stopped and we even spotted a few rays of sunshine between Fargo and Grand Forks. Again I told Best Friend I thought we would surely drive out of it. This time I was right, about 40 miles west of Grand Forks we finally did drive out of it.
Whenever we take a trip I love to stop and investigate small towns along the way. So we pulled off the interstate and visited a little town south of Grand Forks called Buxton. It is a town of about 350 population and seemed to be a neatly kept community. However there was not a single paved road in the entire community. After photographing a couple interesting buildings we hopped back on the super slab. A few miles farther we came upon a town named Reynolds and took a side trip into it. It also was about 350 population. Again, no paved streets! Although the town had a neat little park with a really nice veterans memorial. Also we happened upon a Model T Ford standing in some grass and it had been mowed around. I thought it was in pretty good condition, and wondered why it was not stored in a shed. A few miles farther we stopped at a town named Thompson. This was a bigger town but it too had no paved streets, and with the rain they were really bad. This town was over 1000 population but the main street was very dilapidated. If you ever go to North Dakota these are a few places you probably won't find featured in the tourism brochures.
Saturday afternoon Jeff and I drove around the countryside checking out a couple of little towns near Devils Lake -- you guessed it, No Paved Streets.
I told Jeff, Devils Lake should have a slogan, Great Hunting, Fishing and Paved Streets! We both had a good chuckle over that.
Have a great week!
