Man arrested in Cruger is charged with identity theft
LEXINGTON, Mississippi (STPNS) -- L.C. Coleman, 43, was arrested on Sept. 11 at a rented house in Cruger after an ongoing investigation.
A string of events led Holmes County Sheriff Willie March to Coleman's being arrested in connection with a stolen Income Tax Refund check that was apparently stolen from a Post Office Box in January.
After the check had not arrived, the owner called the Internal Revenue Service and was told that L.C. Coleman cashed the check in Missouri and the check was deposited to the account of American Banker with a Missouri address, according to a stamped imprint on the check.
The person called the Holmes County Sheriff's Department on Sept. 5 reporting the incident.
Crime Stoppers had received a tip on July 18 stating that Coleman was using a check machine and a credit card machine to "make money."
Sheriff March said Coleman had come to his office in August to inform him that he was in Holmes County and was investing in the private prison system. He left March one of his business cards.
The sheriff remembered Coleman's name and the card he had left him. From this information, March was able to learn from Florida authorities that Coleman had been arrested numerous times in Florida for check and credit card identity theft.
This information and from information from Coleman's visit to the Holmes County Sheriff's Department led Sheriff March to Coleman's living in Cruger and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Sept. 12, a search warrant was issued on the house Coleman occupied. Officers allegedly found a credit card machine and a rubber stamp bearing the name of American Banker in the house.
Coleman was out on bond for a felony charge in Cruger.
His bond was revoked and he will remain in the Holmes County Jail without bond.
