- Passages to Recovery, one of the nation's premier providers of wilderness-based recovery services for young men, is now accepting registrations for its second annual Systemic Family Intervention Training/Workshop, which is scheduled for Oct. 19 to 21 at the Troon Golf/Spa Resort in St. George, Utah.
According to Brandi Bradbury, Passages to Recovery's admissions and outreach coordinator, the workshop is designed to provide essential training and networking opportunities for educational consultants, private practice clinicians and recovery program personnel.
'We're excited to be able to host this training again,' Ms. Bradbury said. 'This workshop provides critical information that can make a real difference in the ways that educational consultants and members of the recovery community serve their clients.'
Joining Passages to Recovery to present this training are co-hosts Prescott House, Life Designs Ranch, Four Circles Recovery Center, and SunHawk Academy.
'We have a great team of co-hosts,' Ms. Bradbury said. 'Having such a quality group of programs helping to present this training demonstrates both the dedication of our fellow professionals and the value that they see in Systemic Family Intervention.'
The training has also been well received by members of the educational consulting community, Ms. Bradbury said. 'Ben Mason, Maureen Brennan and James Murray to name a few of last year's participants, have told us that workshops resulted in proven benefits for them and their clients, and we're confident that this year's sessions will be equally informative and beneficial.'
Systemic Family Intervention
Systemic Family Intervention is based upon a treatment model that embraces the following two core principles:
Chemical dependency is considered to be a family illness, and family and friends have a significant role in either exacerbating or overcoming this problem.
The diseases of addiction and alcoholism can be addressed in a gentle and respectful way, without confrontation or shame.
'Systemic Family Intervention is psycho-educational, not clinical,' Ms. Bradbury said. 'It's not about pointing the finger at anyone. It's about looking at the overall dysfunction in the family and supporting each person as they identify how they need to change in order for the family to become healthy.'
Training Topics
To help educational consultants and recovery professionals put the theories of Systemic Family Intervention into practice for the benefit of their clients and patients, the Oct. 19-21 training will address the following topics:
History and evolution of intervention
Systemic health and 'alive family' concepts
Components of systemic model
Intervening on a shame-based disease
False beliefs and shifting perceptions/objectives
Assessment of the family
Shame reduction techniques
The process step-by-step
Sculpting techniques
Outcomes with case examples
Establishing new norms
'The Systemic Family Intervention training will dramatically increase participants' ability to address the whole family, instead of focusing only on the person with the addiction,' Ms. Bradbury said. 'This is one of the core trainings that are needed to become a board-certified interventionist, and it will greatly enhance the ability of educational consultants and recovery professionals to treat their clients and patients.'
About the Trainers
The three days of training will be led by two experts on the topic: Wayne Raiter, M.A., LICSW, LMFT, and Heather R. Hayes, M.Ed., LPC.
Wayne Raiter, M.A., LICSW, is the president of Executive Care, Inc.; the founder of Speare/Raiter Training; and the author of the Systemic Intervention model. The former clinical director of the Johnson Institute and the founder of the Lakewood Counseling and Career Center, Mr. Raiter also operates a private clinical practice in the Twin Cities area. Mr. Raiter's professional experience also includes more than three decades of service in the training and consulting fields
Heather R. Hayes, M.Ed., LPC is a licensed counselor and Board-Certified Interventionist who maintains a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia. With more than 25 years' experience in the treatment of addictions and other disorders, Ms. Hayes now specializes in treating adolescents, teens and young adults with trauma and addictive disorders.
'We are honored to work with Wayne and Heather. Wayne is the co-author of two of the three highly recognized intervention models, and his expertise and delivery of the information is very engaging,' said Ms. Bradbury 'Heather is a world renowned trainer and leader in the treatment of addictions.'
