- In the just-released update of a classic book on how to make a living as a freelance commercial writer, Michigan copywriter Nancy Adams (http://www.writemind.net/about/) tells how she left the 8 to 5 world to start a successful home-based business.
The story begins in 2004, with Adams feeling frustrated and stuck in her dead-end job as a local government analyst. Longing for a less stressful and more fulfilling opportunity, she dreaded going to work each day.
Then Adams read 'The Well-Fed Writer' (Fanove Publishing, 2000), the award-winning Book-of-the-Month Club selection by freelance commercial writer Peter Bowerman (http://wellfedwriter.com/). In his book, Bowerman told how he parlayed his writing talent - and little else - into a lucrative business, offering detailed advice on how readers could follow his lead.
The timing couldn't have been better. Adams was confident in her writing talent, and she dreamed of using her skill to make a living by helping businesses improve their written communications, from Web content to marketing materials to advertising and packaging copy. Bowerman's book not only inspired her, but actually made the dream seem attainable. Adams wrote an email to the author, and to her surprise, he responded within hours.
'Peter was very generous with his time and insight,' Adams says. 'We exchanged several emails; he told me I could do this, and I believed him. I made my decision and never looked back.'
That was in 2004. Today Adams is a successful freelance writer and the owner of Adams Business Communications (http://www.writemind.net). 'To make a living as a writer, working with people around the world, is a dream come true,' Adams says. 'To do it while looking out my window into a beautiful Michigan forest - priceless!'
In 2008 Bowerman invited several freelancers, including Adams, to share their stories in his new book. Adams says the recognition is an honor, but as the only Michigan writer featured in the book, she hopes her story will send a message to other Michiganders looking for a change in career, whether out of choice or necessity.
'Don't listen to naysayers who say you can't succeed in an economic recession,' Adams says, citing a quote from Bowerman's book: 'Corporations are doing more with less: fewer people, less resources and smaller budgets, and many organizations rely heavily on freelancers to help them pick up the slack.'
Pointing out that much of Bowerman's advice can be applied to any home-based business, Adams adds, 'The Internet and social media have made it easy to start a home-based business. If you have a skill or talent that businesses or consumers need, you're halfway there.'
Adams also stresses that a college degree and tons of experience aren't absolute requirements for success . 'A website, confidence in your abilities, communication skills, and a good dose of charm and humor are really all you need - you can learn the rest.'
