- Two awards exceeding $1 million were handed down to each plaintiff by Gwinnett State Court Judge John Doran in a terrifying case of assault with a deadly weapon.
Noted crime victim attorney Melvin L. Hewitt, Jr., of Isenberg & Hewitt, represented the plaintiffs in the case of Akeisha Turner and Daneane Robinson vs. Jose Vincente Targa-Rivera and Enrique Grandos-Terrazas and Crase, Inc. d/b/a Chelsea's, Civil Action No. 08-C-21382-S6.
On July 1, 2007, Turner, a dancer at Chelsea's nightclub, was picked up after her shift by her companion and roommate, Daneane Robinson. Targa-Rivera and Grandos-Terrazas followed Turner out of the club and into the parking lot. The pair continued to follow Turner and her companion as they traveled south on I-85 from Barrow County into Gwinnett County.
Targa-Rivera and Grandos-Terrazas then began firing shots from a handgun at the plaintiffs' car. The rear window of their SUV was shattered and both plaintiffs were hit by shattered glass, each incurring minor cuts and mild soft tissue injuries. Robinson used her cell phone to contact 911 and Gwinnett County Police intercepted the defendants on I-85.
'We are very pleased Akiesha and Daneane were compensated over a million dollars each,' said Hewitt. 'Their experience was a living nightmare and they're lucky to be alive.'
Targa-Rivera failed to answer the complaint, alleging he and co-defendant Grandos-Terrazas followed Turner to her car. Both defendants agreed to plea to criminal charges brought by Barrow County, where the incident began. In the hearing on damages, Judge Doran awarded each plaintiff $1,589.00 in actual damages; $100,000.00 in physical and emotional pain and suffering; and $1,000,000.00 in punitive damages. The cases against Grandos-Terrazas and Chelsea's remain pending.
