Washington Park grocery store destroyed in morning fire
Fire departments battled a morning blaze today that has destroyed a Washington Park business.
The fire started around 7 a.m. at the Caseyville Discount Grocery, located at 4715 Caseyville Ave.
No injuries were reported, according to Washington Park fire officials.
The cause of the fire is unknown; representatives from the state fire marshal will investigate the fire.
The grocery store, which has changed ownership and names, has been in the news several times over the years.
In 1997, three family members who owned the Royal Land Food Store were shot and wounded while closing up for the night. Later that year, a patron was shot twice in the back while entering the store.
In 1994, a Washington Park man was shot and killed in the parking lot of the then Speedway Food.
