Public safety briefs: Accident victim identified
KANSAS CITY | Authorities on Monday identified a 59-year-old man who died Saturday in a forklift accident as Angelo Cambiano of Kansas City.
Cambiano was operating a forklift when it turned over on him at the commercial cave complex Hunt Midwest SubTropolis at 8300 N.E. Underground Drive, in the Clay County community of Randolph, police said.
Barbara Theriot, area director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said the agency had no plans to investigate the incident because Cambiano owned the business, A-C Compactors & Containers.
KANSAS CITY | Friend accidentally shot
An intoxicated driver showing off his gun accidentally shot a friend Saturday evening, police said.
Police think the shooting occurred in Kansas City, Kan., but the panicked shooter got lost trying to reach a hospital, raced past a Kansas City police car and ran three stop signs. The officers pulled him over and summoned help for the passenger, who had a chest wound. He was expected to survive. Officers cited the 26-year-old driver for DUI.
OVERLAND PARK | Son charged
A 48-year-old Merriam man has been charged with holding a gun on his 82-year-old father while trying to get money from him at a grocery store.
Joseph William Hammer appeared Monday in Johnson County District Court on one count of aggravated assault.
According to Overland Park police, Hammer on Sunday allegedly pulled a gun and forced his father to drive to the Hen House in the 6900 block of 135th Street to withdraw money from an ATM. The men argued, and police arrested the son. Police said they found a gun in the car.
SHAWNEE | Charges brought in boy's death
Authorities have filed vehicular homicide charges against a 34-year-old Lenexa man in a motorcycle crash that killed an 11-year-old boy at a birthday party.
Police said the man, Sean Noel Jenkins, was giving motorcycle rides to children at the Sept. 29 party at the Pinegate West apartments. One of those children, Jared Rainey of St. Joseph, died after the cycle struck an oncoming car. Police said the boy had been wearing a helmet that was inadequate for motorcycle riding.
KANSAS CITY, KAN. | Man in drug ring sentenced
A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced Monday for his role in a drug ring that distributed more than a ton of marijuana in the Kansas City area.
A federal judge sentenced Victor Hugo Ramos of Kansas City, Kan., to 15 years and eight months in federal prison. He had pleaded guilty in June 2007 to one count of conspiring to distribute and possess marijuana with the intent to distribute more than 2,200 pounds of the drug.
KANSAS CITY, KAN. | Person dies in crash
One person died late Sunday after a driver lost control of a vehicle on northbound Interstate 35.
The crash occurred about 11:30 p.m. when the driver tried to change lanes on I-35 near Mission Road, then had to swerve to avoid another vehicle. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which slid into a ditch and struck a light pole and several trees, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.
NORTH KANSAS CITY | Fire damages business
Firefighters on Monday responded to a blaze inside McCartney Cabinets at 1330 Burlington Road.
The three-alarm fire inside the two-story brick building was reported about 7:50 a.m., said Fire Capt. Kurt Breininger with the North Kansas City Fire Department.
Breininger said fire officials think the blaze started near an outside dock. There were about four workers inside at the time. None was hurt. Two North Kansas City firefighters suffered minor neck and back injuries, he said. The cause and extent of damage is under investigation.
