Nader seeks signatures, donations from Texans
Ralph Nader is trying to get Texans' attention -- and support.
He is working to get thousands of Texans who did not vote in a primary to sign a petition to let him on the ballot as a third-party presidential candidate.
'We want to give the people of the Lone Star State an opportunity to vote for a platform that helps them and their families and that challenges the corporate powers that increasingly dominate their daily lives,' Nader said in a statement Tuesday.
Nader, 74, said he needs $150,000 in campaign donations for the Texas effort, as well as a group of volunteers.
To run as an independent, he needs 74,108 signatures. To run with a party, such as the Green or Reform parties, he needs 43,992 signatures. The deadline to deliver signatures for an independent bid is May 12 and for a third-party bid is May 27, according to the Texas secretary of state's office.
Nader chose Matt Gonzalez of San Francisco, a lawyer, as his running mate. Gonzalez is a native Texan who grew up in McAllen.
