KC mayor wants help for East Side
Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser stood at 27th and Prospect today and said the city needs to do more in its budget to help the East Side.
Funkhouser said the city council is starting to address decades-old structural problems with the budget that have left the East Side neglected and infrastructure needs long unfunded. But he acknowledged that his efforts to reduce funding for the zoo while increasing funding for streets and police have met with limited success in the latest budget proposals.
'I think we're going to adopt a budget that moves us in the right direction,' Funkhouser said of the new budget, which the council votes on tomorrow. 'But it's barely a start.'
The council has debated numerous budget options in recent weeks, and there are likely to be a flurry of amendments when the council meets tomorrow. Funkhouser said he will continue to push for funding the basic services that citizens value most.
