Independence City Manager Robert Heacock today named Lt. Col. David Lamken acting police chief to replace Fred Mills, who announced his retirement earlier this month.
Lamken, who has served the department for more than 34 years, will take over the post Saturday, after Mills' last day.
Lamken has served as commander of the department's operations bureau since 2004. Before that, he was major of the patrol division, a captain in community services and a lieutenant in the investigations unit.
