Former Mountie excelling on field
Tony Petulla missed most of last baseball season with an injury, but the former Philipsburg-Osceola standout has been making up for lost time this spring.
He was recently named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week based on his performance in Penn State-Altoona's final seven games during its Florida trip.
In that stretch, Petulla went 9-for-23 (.391) with six RBIs, five runs scored, a double and two home runs. He walked twice and struck out once in the seven-game stretch.
To date he's hitting .424 with seven runs scored, 14 hits, four doubles and two homers. He's driven in 10 runs. PSU-Altoona is 3-7.
Baseball
Matt Adams (P-O, Slippery Rock) is hitting .529 with three runs scored, nine hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Slippery Rock is 8-5.
Matt McCamley (P-O, Lock Haven) has a .204 batting average with seven runs scored, 11 hits, three doubles and 11 RBIs. Lock Haven is 8-12.
Brian Kochik (Bald Eagle Area, Lock Haven) has pitched 72/3 innings and has allowed 12 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) walked six and struck out five. He has a 9.39 ERA and a 0-0 record.
Matt Smith (Penns Valley, Ohio U niversity) has pitched in 201/3 innings, allowing 16 hits and eight runs, seven earned. He has walked nine and struck out 10 while compiling a 3.10 ERA and a 2-1 record. Ohio is 8-8.
Jon Gray (State College, PSU-Behrend) is hitting .273 with four runs scored, six hits, one double and three RBIs. Behrend is 7-4.
Matt Moberg (State College, Siena) has an 8.47 ERA and a 1-3 record. In 17 innings he has allowed 27 hits and 20 runs, 16 of them earned, while walking eight and striking out seven. Siena is 3-13.
Wes Borden (State College, Villanova) is hitting .239. He has 11 hits, two doubles, three RBIs and has scored seven runs. Villanova is 7-12.
Austin Borden (State College, Lehigh) has a .298 batting average. He has 17 hits, including three doubles and a homer, scored 13 runs and driven in 10. Lehigh is 11-11.
Andrew Grimm (State College, Lehigh) has a 5.00 ERA and an 0-1 record. In nine innings, he has given up nine hits and five runs, all earned, walked six and struck out eight.
Kevin Scholly (State College, Shippensburg) is hitting .347 with 15 runs scored, 26 hits, six doubles and 14 RBIs. Shippensburg is 13-11.
Matt White (State College, Clarion) is hitting .333 with four runs scored, six hits, a homer and six RBIs.
Chad White (State College, Clarion) is hitting .571 with three runs scored, four hits, a double and two RBIs.
Austin Homan (State College, East Carolina) is hitting .111. He has scored two runs and has driven in three. The Pirates are 15-6.
Matt Young (State College, Allegheny) is hitting .314 with eight runs scored, 11 hits, two doubles, a triple, two homers and 11 RBIs. Allegheny is 2-8.
Travis Guthrie (State College, PSU-Altoona) has a .200 batting average for the Lions.
Softball
Christie Wiest (Penns Valley, Bucknell) is 3-8 with a 2.06 ERA. In 711/3 innings, she has given up 74 hits, 31 runs, 21 of them earned, walked 23 and struck out 28. Bucknell is 5-15.
Kayleen Sidisky (Bellefonte, Bloomsburg) is hitting .302 with seven runs scored, 13 hits, two doubles and five RBIs. Bloomsburg is 17-2.
Natalie Zimmerman (State College, Bloomsburg) has started seven games behind the plate. She has a batting average of .409 with nine hits, a homer and six RBIs.
Julia Popovich (State College, Lock Haven) has taken on a dual role this spring, adding pitching to her resume. She has worked 301/3 innings, giving up 32 hits, eight runs, five of them earned, walked seven and struck out 12. She has a 1.15 ERA and a 4-0 record. At the plate she has hit .111 with five runs scored, six hits including a double, and two RBIs. Lock Haven is 12-5.
Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, St. Francis) scattered four hits and struck out five as St. Francis shut out UMBC in the UMBC Spring Classic on Saturday. Caldwell now has 305 career strikeouts, moving her into second place on the school's all-time list. St. Francis won the UMBC tournament and is now 8-16 for the season.
Lauryn Weaver (BEA, Pitt-Bradford) is hitting .333 with two runs scored, eight hits, a homer and three RBIs. Pitt-Bradford is 1-9.
Kara Myers (Penns Valley, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .433 with nine runs scored, 13 hits including a double and a homer, and seven RBIs. PSU-Altoona is 3-7.
Emily Cummins (Penns Valley, PSU-Altoona) is 2-4 with a 4.15 ERA. In 342/3 innings, she has given up 49 hits and 20 runs, 15 earned. She has walked six and struck out 14.
Melissa Claver (State College, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .346 with two runs scored. She has nine hits, including two
